TalkTalk distributes 29k YouView boxes.
Quote:
TalkTalk has distributed 29,000 YouView set-top boxes to subscribers since the launch of the platform in September. http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/m...048920.article
The ISP, which is a joint shareholder in YouView along with BT and the terrestrial broadcasters, is growing its TV customer base by 1000 new homes per day. The figures include both existing TalkTalk talk and internet customers, some of which are eligible for a free upgrade to YouView, as well as new subscribers. TalkTalk, which has invested £8m in the six months to end September on the development, sales and marketing of YouView, is aiming to attract 3m customers to the connected TV service. Overall TalkTalk’s total revenues for the six month period were down almost 2% to £828m compared with the same period last year, while profit grew nearly 6% to £155m. TalkTalk’s chief executive Dido Harding said customer feedback to YouView had been positive and the business was on track to hit its targets. “These results show real trading momentum and are a strong platform from which to build towards our medium term growth targets,” she added. |

Not headline-making but a nice interview with TalkTalk's Chief Executive in today's Independent. Apparently she sits outside her office and is often mistaken for her PA!
On the pay TV front she sees scope for 3m customers and comments "There are 8.5 million Freeview homes. If you want an all-you-can-eat premium pay-TV you've already got it. You couldn't have missed the Sky advertising over the last decade. I've always felt there is a market for Freeview upgraders who want a little bit more telly and not a lot." |

I wonder how many people will use them for nothing more than a Freeview PVR. i know someone who is thinking of getting one as they are with Talk talk and they think it may be a cheap way to get a box. but they have no intention of paying for any thing extra and just want it for a PVR.
Will these boxes work without them being connected to the net as a normal PVR? |

Are talktalk just giving the boxes away without you signing up for a contract then?

No, they stick people onto a 24 month contract.

No, you need to sign up to TalkTalk Plus for two years. That upgrades your phone line to 24Mbps, if it isn't already, and gives you unlimited downloads - essential for all those online channels, and pretty useful for your computer.
Because we have Sky+HD which uses progressive downloads, we can get all our catch-up stuff between midnight and 3pm and watch it in peak time, when downloading is restricted. |
