Can you enjoy a song by an artist you hate?
Inspired by the mention of Mariah Carey in the No 1 Xmas song thread, can anyone really enjoy a song by an artist they despise?
Mariah Carey makes me feel sick! My sis agreed that she can't stand her but says All I Want for Xmas is You is her favourite Xmas song! This doesn't make sense to me! Should I be able to appreciate the song and ignore the singer? |

I don't hate or despise them, but I don't like Destiny's Child. I like Survivor.

Daniel Beddingfield gives me the heebie jeebies but some of his early music was good.
If I like a song I don't particuarly care who sings it. |

I cant stand the Image Mcfly have, but I have to admit I like some of their songs, which they write themselves. I sat thorugh a performance of theirs on tv a while ago, weird, hated their stage act and 'image', but noticed they played live, (singing and instruments) and the songs where actually quite good. I might buy their album, cos I can just listen to that

I despise Robbie Williams with a vengance, but as much as it pains me to say it "Angels" is a pretty good song.
I'd only listen to it, then I don't have to look at his smug face

I agree that I go for the song not the singer.
However, I may sing along to Robbie Williams in the car but I wouldn't admit that in public or buy one of his albums because I don't want to be associated with 'pop' music (or ruin a decent cd collection). If that makes me a music snob then so be it! |

Not really, cos the reason I dislike (hate's a bit strong) an artist is because I don't like their music anyway.
Artists change for the worst in some cases anyway - Phil Collins, Chris De Berg both used to be ok, way back when, but seem to generally be despised now. |

I don't like Madonna as a person, but I like most of her songs, although I've never actually bought any.

Chris De Berg - I may be accused of having naff taste but early in his career "Dont Pay The Ferryman " & " A Spaceman Came Travelling" were good. Downhill after that. Phill Collins - The only solo track I like is "Against All Odds" The Rest is terrible AOR. But most Geneisis stuff from the late 70's & early 80's is pretty good. Such as "Turn It On" , "Mama", "Land Of Confusion" ect. |

Avril, Britney, Justin, Black Eyed Peas and to be brutally honest I'm getting a bit sick of the sight of Gwen Stefani and those Harajuku girls. I preferred her in No Doubt. You can definately enjoy a song by an artist you hate (and vice versa).

Wish I got respect for writing crap. I'd be a millionaire. |

I don't think it makes someone a music snob to dislike songs because of who sings them.
If you dislike a singer or band then to hear a song by them is a massive turn off IMO. You may like the lyrics or the tune but to hear a screeching voice singing the words makes me switch off instantly. |
