I would say google nexus 7 over an Amazon Kindle Fire. The Amazon offering is good if you want in on the Amazon eco system, thats the ebooks, music, movies from lovefilm etc, but it runs a heavily stripped and modified version of android. Google too offer books, movies, music too from their store, as well as the entire collection of apps on google play store.

You will have no problem running Netflix, spotify and facebook on the nexus as well as very good web browsing.

What is your max budget by the way? and would you consider a 10 inch tab or just the 7 incher?

And get it from a company that is willing to pay their taxes and not use tax avoidance tactics.

There's a comparative review of the Apple iPad Mini, Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD here:
http://www.v3.co.uk/v3-uk/review/222...to-head-review
Overall, the Nexus 7 was judged to be the best of the three, followed by the iPad Mini.

Well I wish I could get him a ipad, but it only part of his pressies (I have a ipad 3 and love it) so guess £160-£200.

That rules both of them out then !

either will do what you ask. I'm biased towards the Nexus 7 - it runs everything the Fire does, with the exception of Lovefilm instant which is an Amazon exclusive I think (but unlikely to matter if you're a Netflix subscriber). Otherwise everything else can be easily installed on the Nexus 7 - the reverse is not true, and running apps which haven't been Amazon approved is fiddly. Not impossible, but fiddly.

If you just want Facebook, Netflix and a browser this won't matter, but if "a good range of apps" is important, best stick with the Nexus.
