I have been given a Sony Hi-8 full size VCR and have played some of my home videos on it however I would like to try a pre-recorded film. I seem to recall that Sony did make some films available on this format but how many and are they rare to find?

The VCR does not have a tuner so perhaps it was not designed for domestic viewing (timeshifting). It is from 1995.

For a moment there I was transported back to my youth and magazines that seemed to have lots of pictures of ladies with no clothes on for some reason. They had lots of ads in the back for 8mm movies of a, shall we say, adult nature. Or so I am told

But that was film not tape....

Pretty clear what he was referring to though - and to answer his original question, yes, there were films issued on 8mm video tape.

As far as I'm aware, the tuner-less machines were basically designed for copying home videos, and in fact we used to use one for copying wedding videos etc. to VHS for people.

To clarify, I have a Sony Hi-8 full size VCR - not the 8mm films on reels. I was wondering if a list of films released on the format was ever available.

In my book on VCR formats issued in 1981 the Sony 8 system is mentioned in that - so it is quite an old system.

As I said above, films were available, and obviously lists of them were.

I used to have a couple of films as test tapes.
