Bits of Radio News

1. PICS: Happy Birthday BBC Radio; Broadcast gear from 1922.

2. BBC radio has marked its 90th birthday by re-broadcasting a single moment from each year it has been on air. Here, producer Nick Baker explained how he made his choices – but which speech radio would have made your list? It was one of those "sounds great on paper" ideas. Ninety tiny, 90-second programmes featuring archive content from 1922 to 2012 to be broadcast in celebration of 90 years of BBC radio, the problem was choosing which speech radio moments to include was far, far too much listening for one person, so we assembled a dozen or so producers, each with different interests and expertise and asked them to "bid" for years. The result, 90 x 90, which started airing across the BBC's networks, is a team-built jigsaw puzzle celebrating the best in speech radio. More.

3. Billy Bragg has taken a swipe at the Government and the radio industry for failing to do enough to stimulate creativity. Delivering the annual Radio Academy John Peel lecture Bragg argued that the introduction of the baccalaureate into English and Welsh schools would not leave enough space for music and drama. He also criticised UK music radio for not doing enough to support new talent, suggesting that kids attending state schools would be disadvantaged compared to those in private schools. More.

4. A new type of radio was unveiled at The Radio Festival by Radioplayer – a single radio unit which brings together all radio platforms. The hybrid radio prototype has a single user interface and offers listeners the chance to browse radio stations regardless of the method of “transmission”. Michael Hill, Managing Director of Radioplayer, demonstrated the ‘kitchen radio’ prototype in a debate about the convergence between broadcast radio and the internet. Radioplayer is already talking to manufacturers about how to take the prototype to the next stage and hopes this will help act as a catalyst for debate and innovation across the radio industry. More.

5. Panjab Radio, which currently only on DAB digital and online, is competing for an analogue frequency in the Coventry area, BizAsia can reveal. According to Ofcom, two declarations have been made for the licence, which at present is held by Quidem – the owners of Touch FM. Panjab Radio Coventry Ltd has put forward its interest for the licence. Ofcom said, “In line with our published relicensing procedures, we are therefore publishing a full re-advertisement for the Coventry licence. This will be open to all applicants – i.e. not limited to those companies who have previously submitted a ‘declaration of intent’ to apply for this licence.” More.

6. Former BBC Radio 1 controller Johnny Beerling is chairing a bid by Radio Skipton to win a community radio licence. He’s joined up with Revolution programme controller John Evington to apply for a licence, aiming to provide the Yorkshire town with a local station. Skipton was home to Yorkshire Dales Radio, aka Fresh Radio, which was recently sold to UKRD and re-branded as Stray FM and moved to Harrogate. More.

7. Stations in England, aiming to save the corporation money, Radio Essex and Radio Hereford & Worcester’s AM transmitters are now broadcasting a message explaining why regular programmes are not available More.

8. Smooth Radio is bringing back its all Christmas station for the second year running, on the national Digital One platform. The station, which operated for two months last year then turned into Smooth 70s, will be in addition to the 70s channel this year, meaning the Smooth brand will have three radio stations on D1. More.

9. Ofcom is marking the milestone of over 200 community radio stations now broadcasting around the UK, but many have failed. From the first station in Melton Mowbray, to the latest to be awarded licenses in Kent and Dorset this month, community radio covers a range of areas and interests. But 18 stations have failed to continue broadcasting, mostly after running into financial trouble. Stations such as Rossendale Radio and XS Wales proved popular but had to close due to unique way most stations are funded – all of which are run not-for-profit. In addition to those groups lucky enough to win a licence, dozens more have been rejected. More.

Other Radio Bits

• First pirate radio station closed down by post office authorities. Brothers Gerald and Wilfred Barker of Norwich are forced to close their radio station down by the BBC:
they recount the tale Here

Newsie Bits

1. An independent study on the impact of radio spectrum on the UK economy has found its use to be worth more than £50 billion per year. The report, commissioned by the Government from Analysys Mason, places TV and radio broadcasting as the highest component of value at an annual £10.8 billion or 21%. Mobile services take 60% of the value. Broadcasting services support a supply chain worth around £16 billion a year and support 40,000 jobs. More.

2. Ofcom has published final regulations and a timetable for the 4G mobile spectrum auction. A reserve price of £1.3bn has been set on the total spectrum being auctioned. Prospective bidders will need to submit their applications to Ofcom together with an initial deposit by 11 December. Bidders will be informed if they have been successful in February/March with licence fees paid and granted during this period. New 4G services will go on sale as early as May. More.

3. A lobbyist who oversaw his company's Sky account during Rupert Murdoch's attempt to gain control of the broadcast and telecoms firm has been appointed as a special adviser to the government minister for competitiveness. James Wild led media operations at the lobbying firm Hanover, where he oversaw the Sky account. Last month, he joined the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) as an adviser to the business minister, Michael Fallon. More.

4. UK TV service YouView has lost a High Court appeal against Total Ltd, a business-to-business provider which operates an online billing portal branded Your View When YouView initially applied to the Trade Marks Registry in May, it was ruled that its name was ‘confusingly similar’ to Your View. More.

5. Sky is working with Roku on a set-top box to distribute to subscribers its new online TV service according to Anthony Wood, chief executive officer for Roku. The hardware will connect TV sets to Sky’s Now TV, enabling customers to view movies, live sports and other videos available through the online service, Wood revealed in an interview. More.

6. The ASA has investigated two issues regarding bid tv, both of which were Upheld. Firstly a sell for a Samsung mobile phone the presenter included the claim "... go try and buy the phone on its own and you will pay hundreds of pounds". Secondly during a sell for a piece of artwork the presenter included the claim "… the unique individual pieces, the one off's, sell for thousands upon thousands, millions in fact, when we are dealing with something that's 35, reproduced only 35 times, you're talking a lot of money, thousands of pounds". A bid tv viewer challenged whether the price claims about the Samsung mobile phone; and the piece of artwork were misleading and could be substantiated. More.

7. North Wales - some viewers will need to retune Freeview from 14th November 2012, as part of the change of what is known as the 800MHz band of frequencies from television to 4th generation mobile broadband, there is an ongoing programme of changes taking place over the next few months. Viewers in North Wales who use the Storeton, Moel-Y-Parc and Llanddona transmitters, and many of the relays will need to retune. Other relays will find one or more multiplexes will be without services during the night. Those watching Freeview on the Isle of Man will also have to retune More.

8. UK broadcaster ITV has reported its interim management statement, which shows an increase of revenues and a strong performance from its production company ITV Studios. The statement, which covers a nine-month period ending on September 30, includes total external revenues up by 4% from last year to £1,573,000,000 (US $2.5 billion). The non-Net Advertising Revenue (NAR) revenues are up 15% to £730 million, driven by ITV Studios’ strong showing. According to the report, ITV Studios’ total revenues are up 20% to £498 million. ITV’s chief executive Adam Crozier credits the broadcaster’s strategy of investing in the creative pipeline for ITV Studios’ performance. “We expect ITV Studios to report over £100 million of profit in 2012, and the number of new commissions and recommissions already secured for 2013 gives us confidence that there will continue to be good underlying growth in the Studios business,” he said. More.

9. As previously reported by Radiomike; Sky has entered a new multi-year licensing agreement with NBCUniversal International Television Distribution for the exclusive television rights in the UK and Ireland to current, upcoming and library feature films from NBCUniversal for its Sky Movies service. All movies will be made available to Sky customers on-demand, on Sky Go, as well as in High Definition (HD) and 3D where available. In addition, Sky has entered a separate agreement with Universal Networks International (UNI) to extend the availability of UNI’s television channels on Sky’s subscription TV packages. More.

10. Ofcom has awarded the licences to run local TV services in Birmingham and Oxford to City TV Broadcasting and That's Oxford, respectively. The award follows new legislation enabling Ofcom to issue local TV licences for DTT. The licences have been awarded for a period of up to 12 years and Ofcom anticipates that some channels may be on air before the end of 2013. More.

11. Virgin Media have unveiled a new 'cloud-based' entertainment service exclusively for Virgin TV customers. Virgin TV Anywhere allows customers to access catch-up TV and on demand content on computers, laptops, tablets and smartphones anywhere with a fixed or wireless internet connection. The service also enables users to comment on TV shows via social networking and includes an app for mobile/tablet devices. More.

12. Sky has won a high court trade dispute over the branding of its new IPTV service. Broadcast reported in July that Starbucks, a UK subsidiary of Hong-Kong based telecoms giant PCCW, had launched a legal challenge over Now TV. PCCW owns a trademark based around the word ‘now’ in the UK for telecoms and broadcast services and an internet TV service in Hong Kong named Now TV. More.

13. More.

14. Netflix has adopted a “poison pill” strategy to protect itself against a possible takeover led by billionaire investor Carl Icahn. The online streaming service has adopted a stockholder rights plan that would dilute the new holding. The company said the rights plan was designed to protect Netflix from efforts to obtain control of the company deemed by the board of directors not to be in its best interests. It was however not intended to interfere with any offer given approval by the board. More.

15. Gains on the sale of News Corp’s remaining interest in NDS and the growth of its channels business was enough to compensate for declines in publishing and satellite operations. The 49% investment in NDS, sold to Cisco in July, netted News Corp a gain of $1.4 billion. News Corp’s cable network programming segment delivered growth of 16%. Fox International Channels benefitted from local currency growth. The company reported revenue for the three months ending September 30, 2012 of $8.14 billion, a $177 million, a 2% increase on the equivalent quarter in 2011. More.

16. UK viewers could soon watch post-watershed programmes before 9pm under proposals being put forward by a lobbying group for cable and satellite broadcasters. Peak-time shows are currently not allowed to be shown before the watershed, unless they are cut to remove swearing, violence and sex. However, pay-per-view programmes and content on premium film subscription channels are allowed before the watershed because viewers have to key in a pin code before they can watch them.

17. The satellite broadcaster Sky is testing the latest set top box technology, as is software technologies developer Irdeto. Sky intends to begin testing Storm Test, from Silicon & Software Systems (S3), a system that has been developed for the digital TV industry, in order to implement an automatic verification of set top boxes. More.

18. Digital Satellite Warranty Cover: misappropriation and misuse of Sky customer information. Sky would like to make customers aware of its successful civil proceedings against of a number of individuals who have misappropriated and misused confidential Sky customer information. The action relates to the activities of a satellite warranty company, Digital Satellite Warranty Cover (DSWC), which was forced into liquidation by the High Court last year, at the request of Financial Services Authority (FSA). In its judgment handed down on 1st October 2012, the High Court found the company officers of DSWC personally liable for unlawfully obtaining the names, addresses, phone numbers and installation details of Sky customers. DSWC then used this information in order to contact customers and sell extended service plans for Sky satellite television equipment. In addition to unlawfully accessing and misusing customer information, DSWC also infringed Sky’s trademarks and passed itself off as either part of Sky or an endorsed partner. Full Details.

Sky has started to broadcast a 3D test card, ostensibly to help viewers get the best out of their 3D TV viewing experience. TV presenter Zoe Ball presents the new 3D Test Card, which broadcasts on the Sky 3D channel from 1st December alongside a character called Mr 3D. More.

Broadcasters have further work to complete on Ultra High Definition Television before it can enter the broadcast mainstream, according to the EBU’s head of media fundamentals & production. Speaking at the SMPTE Annual Technical Conference in Hollywood Hans Hoffmann said the interfaces needed for programme production and for connections in domestic equipment both needed attention. The new family of compression technologies, HEVC will be published shortly, but much testing remains to be done. More.

Forget the much-hyped price reports of $20,000 each, at least if LG’s debut 4K Ultra-High Definition sets are any guide. LG’s massive 84” U-HD sets are on sale now in California. Rumoured initially to be costing $19,999 the first displays actually went on sale this past weekend at $16,999. Lawndale, a town on the edge of Los Angeles, had its mayor declare the event “U-HD Day” as he opened the ‘Video & Audio Centre’ electrical retail store, and some 1000 eager visitors – including some who had queued all night – viewed the unit (84LM9600) and six were sold by 2pm. More.

Acclaimed movie director James Cameron admitted he was amazed by the quality of 3D-TV displayed at IBC. Speaking at a demo on the Dolby booth of the Dolby/Philips 3D joint-venture (which uses Dutch company Dimenco’s technology), he said “There is room for improvement but this already good enough for the consumer market, you guys are the first to blow out the door”. More.
* * *
Discovery and Sky have restated their intent to stay with 3DTV while the content proposition remains on movies, specials and live events. It’s been two years since the world’s first 3DTV channels launched in a blaze of publicity, but the industry has not managed to translate its enthusiasm for the format to consumers in high enough numbers, prompting many advocates to reign in their expectations. Take the Sky 3D channel, which launched in the UK in October 2010, and has accrued 250,000 Sky subscribers. BSkyB prides itself on pioneering new technology, it has invested heavily in production equipment (primarily OB facilities for live 3D sports) and has always described its 3D activity as core to attracting consumers to the brand rather than a profit centre in its own right More.
* * *
Researchers in South Korea have developed new technology that could enable 3D television and cinema to be viewed without glasses. The team, from Seoul National University, created a slatted barrier that is placed on the screen itself and creates the illusion of depth in the viewer’s perception. Previous attempts at making glasses-free 3D TV have made use of a similar technology, but they required the screen to be viewed from a certain angle. More.

Well, we already knew ITV1 was dropping the 1 and the rebrand was to happen in January 2013, instead of Autumn 2012.

Brace yourselves....

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/media/ne...e-rebrand.html

ITV1 finally loses its yellow for a 'colour-shifting logo' (basically depending on the ident or theme, it will have a mix of those colours. See the DS article for examples.)

ITV2 goes from lime green to hot red
ITV3 reverts from brown to blue
ITV4 goes from dark turquoise green to grey
CITV becomes orangey yellow

ITV News is royal blue
ITV Sport is green

I like the concept for ITV but the style and curvy logo will make the channels feel more female skewed. Glad the '1' is being axed of course and great to hear ITV3 is going back to blue - the launch identity was much better than the current one IMO!

Yeugh!

They'll have to spend another £million or two (on top of what this lot cost them) educating people to be able to realise what channel they're watching...

Quote:
“In this form, the logo has four colours that are the "perfect points" on the colour spectrum. But this new logo is intended to be a chameleon and will sometimes change according to the show or channel using something that ITV is calling "colour picking".”

Whow!!

Dropping the 1 from ITV1 is a bizarre move, yes some people still just call it ITV, but younger people have known it as ITV1 and being a multichannel broadcaster it makes sense to have a numbered flagship channel, it's only gunna cause confusion.

16-11-2012
Yeah, dropping the "1" from "ITV1" only makes sense if they were going to rename the other channels something like "ITV Extra", "ITV Classic", and "ITV Sport". Having all the other channels keep the same name makes the dropping of the "1" stupid.

It may well happen in time. There has been a trend in recent years to give sister channels names not numbers in order to give them more of an identity.

12.607 H has 55273 which is Nicktoons in 16:9. Is this the start of all the Nick. channels going 16:9 or just the one channel, it has been there for a few weeks now.

Hopefully all the Nick channels will change. Also wonder when and if the Cartoon Network channels will change to 16:9?

Don't bank on it. They have already been running tests for weeks at 13 and 19 deg E for both RT HD and RT Doc HD but both just still say "Coming Soon". RT Doc HD would be nice.

The difference here is that they are broadcasting the normal output on the test channel whereas on the other satellites it is promo loops.

Ofcom have announced that they are planning to clear more of the UHF TV band currently used for Freeview from 2018. The 700 MHz band will be cleared, with services moving to the 600 MHz band, including a portion of the UHF band currently not in use since switchover.

Until that happens, they are looking at temporary uses. The BBC, Channel 4 and Arqiva have suggested that it be used for two temporary HD multiplexes to encourage DVB-T2 receiver uptake. Sky was against any more terrestrial TV services.

Ofcom have now decided to use some of the temporarily vacant frequencies for digital TV multiplexes and some for "White Space Devices".

Now, this is where it becomes relevant to satellite TV: As part of the BBC, Channel 4 and Arqiva submission to Ofcom on the recent consultation on the future of the UHF band, the BBC have said that:
Quote:
“The BBC Executive plans to simulcast a third BBC television service and potentially the BBC Red Button video service in HD on the interim multiplex from its launch.”

Which, with platform neutrality means that satellite viewers could well see more HD from the BBC soon.

Channel 4 has also proposed to launch one or two more services in HD, according to the document.

BBC/C4/Arqiva response:

Indeed, but the aforementioned document might clarify what C4 told you recently... http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showt...3#post61405183, which forum members took to meaning Freeview, given mention of the switchover.

The bit I can't get my head around is how Ofcom can say that Freeview viewers will only have to retune, and very few will be disadvantaged. But how many of them today have devices capable of receiving DVB-T2 MPEG4, when Freeview squeezes all existing channels onto half the spectrum?
