Have any albums recovered from a under-performing debut? For example, Leona and Christina's new LPs haven't really set the chart alight. But in situations like these, that have deamed as a flop, is there any cases that have sorted themselves out with a 2nd single release?

The closest I can think of is Adeles 21. Rolling in the deep got it a nice amount of sales but it was her Someone like you performance at the Brits that sold the album

How about James Morrison's second album after he released the duet with Nelly Furtado??

PS LMAO at the suggestion that '21' was under performing before the Brits. It had already sold a sh*tload before that performance 208k in the first week. In the Uk. In January. In 2011?

Pixie Lott's debuted didn't do too good despite 2 number 1 singles. But when Cry me out came out, it's sales went sky high and stayed in the top 40 throughout most of 2010 when more and more singles were released.

Yes. 21 was massive from the get go - It had already sold about 500k before her SLY Brits performance

I seem to think Melanie C's first album (Northern Star) started off pretty slowly, it wasn't until Never Be The Same Again and I Turn To You that sales really picked up.

so adele`s lead single, the biggest selling single worldwide last year, didn't sell the album?

speaking of christina, `dirrty` under-performed in the us and it was `beautiful` that helped to sell `stripped` over there. otherwise, i would have also gone for robbie with `angels`.

Stronger by Kelly Clarkson helped push her album sales massively.

Rihanna- Rude Boy Rated R entered at number 16 and only after this became a chart staple did the album recover.

Beyonce- I Am Sasha Fierece two big hits but a low entry and sales at 10 for her Halo and the continual slew of singles shifted this album i believe it only reached it's peak of number 2 after it's fourth (official) single Sweet Dreams released almost a year after.

I kinda think Rihanna's Rated R. It started quite slow, but Rude Boy (3rd single, 2nd in some territories) really helped her sales for that era.

Although Rated r peaked at a low peak originally, it did sell 90k that week. It was a huge week for sales.

Did it actually?

I remember Alicia Keys debuted at #17 around the same time as well, which was quite shocking because she had that massive X-Factor performance.

I seem to remember Chasing Lights by The Saturdays was struggling quite a bit until they released Issues.

Speaking of Alicia Keys, Empire State of Mine (original and solo versions) did give Element of Freedom a boost to #1

Fleetwood Mac's Tango in the Night never hit #1 until the third single (Little Lies) was released in 1987.

Yeah, it debuted at 11 but then dropped out of the top 40 within a few of weeks but Issues pushed it into the top 10 and it stuck around in the top 40 for about three months.

I think the Black Eyed Peas album, The E.N.D, in 2009 had a surge of sales when Meet Me Halfway got popular.

That was popular from the get go and had a high volume of sales due to the two preceeding singles MMH just kept it going

Britney's "Toxic" definitely helped the performance of "In the Zone" which had dropped out of the Top 40 after a few weeks but Toxic got it back into the Top 20 and the album was eventually certified platinum

I recall Moves Like Jagger helping Maroon 5's 2010 album Hands All Over back into the charts. It sold something like 50k in 2010 but I gather it's been certified gold now which is adequate I suppose

Ego by The Saturdays helped it's parent album, the floppy but fantastic Wordshaker, back into the Top 40 meaning it clocked up a total of 3 weeks in the Top 40. The album peaked at #9. Really should've spent twice as long at least in the Top 40

Pink's album "I'm Not Dead", I'm pretty sure was buoyed up by the success of "U+Ur Hand", in the USA anyway.

Scissor Sisters' debut album as well, original lead single "Laura" peaked outside the UK top 40, but follow up singles "Comfortably Numb" and "Take Your Mama" shifted it up the charts until it eventually became the best-selling album of the year in the UK.

Thriller in the early 80's. Was struggling with only The Girl Is Mine as a single then really took off, both in the UK and US, with Billie Jean.

IIRC it just pipped the second best-seller in the final hours of the year and Rado 1 in fact announce it as second best-seller in their NYE chart.

Yeah! I just remembered that one. Hands All Over initially struggled in sales and their three single releases didn't do so well either. I read in an interview from a Maroon 5 member (not Adam Levine) about how disappointed they were about their low sales and such. Then, Moves Like Jagger happened (along with The Voice) and well, Hands All Over had a surge in sales.

'Rise' by Gabrielle was only selling moderately with the first single, Sunshine.
But when the title track was released, album sales went through the roof.

True and for 2 years after he slayed haha
I'd say Mariah and Whitney's debuts. Both had low entries, but subsequent singles made them chart toppers and months on end too.
