funny enough another word for relevant sounds like a contestants name, and it's the word "germane"

ps I'd love a new anorak for Christmas.

Relevant just means reflective of what's in the charts at the moment. Could be anything from One Direction to Adele. If they want Christopher to be 'relevant' give him something other than 80s power ballads to sing.

What would be a 'relevant' song for him to sing?

For an artist or song to be 'relevant' used in this context it means that it relates to what's happening in today's current music scene. They can't find a niche for what Christopher does because he's out of touch with anything that's going on.

The theme to "Love Boat"?

I guess for Chris it's kind of "relevant".

That's right.
"Relevant"
appropriate to the matter at hand is what the "Countdown" host said on Monday.

Nothing whatsoever, it's a phrase thats been misused so much it's now completely bastardised.

Relevant simply means something that is in keeping with the idiom in question.

It's taken to mean something that is relevant to the current trends of the muisic industry and possibly sales, but until they make the bridge of what something is relevant too....it's irrelevant.

For example:

Ella is relevant...thats a complete nonsense....relevant to what?

Ella's style is relevant to the current charting trends of the music industry in the UK and the musical buying trends of the demographic of 12-18 year olds.....that is fine.

I would agree, however word usage is changing all the time, and in the context that it's being used one should assume your example 2.

James is relevant. The Co-op selling three ready meals for £7 is irrelevant. The Very Reverend Vivienne Faull is the dean of York Minster, but that is not relevant.

I wouldnt say Ella was 12-18 trendy at all.

Typical music company c**p. I knew that was what they meant but it is another example of how schizophrenic this program is now that the judges also say "we are looking for someone different" and "we are looking for an international recording artist". Best of luck with that! There have been some acts that have done well only one winner that went international and I contend that was due to luck rather than good judgment. So shouldn't they be looking to the future and not the present.

'Wow, that was just so current and relevant' = 'I can't actually think of anything good to say about that performance, but you're on the shortlist for the final'.

'Umm...that wasn't really current and relevant' = 'I can't actually think of anything bad to say about that performance, but you're not on the shortlist for the final'.

If you're asking questions like this then you're not relevant to the key demographic of this show.

In the context of the X Factor I'm pretty sure it just means "We think you could sell."

Every time I think about the show's silly buzzwords they trot out parrot fashion to the point of them having no meaning - ("relevant" to what? as Old Tallen says) - and manipulation it makes me glad I probably wouldnt ever get near this programme, though I do like expressing myself through songs I enjoy and identify with, ones that move me

It's an odd one. Olly Murs is now a popular recording star, thanks to his particulary brand of bouncey ska influenced pop. On the show he sang pure pop (George Michael/Robbie/Beatles/Queen/Motown). Had he sung covers of Madness, the Specials or Bob Marley (his current pop roots) he would have been criticized that raggae/ska is a dated musical form and he should be singing something else.

Re Chris and the 1980's Power Ballads. Am I wrong or are these songs not the staple of the currently "relevant" Glee TV Show!!! (I know it's not relevant but it sells shed loads of "units")

I remember Don't Stop Believing from the early 80's and couldn't believe when a couple of years ago, I was sitting with a group of teenagers, this song came on they started singing it!!!

And! When Joe McElderry was in X Factor, he murdered several Journey/80's Classics!!!! And nobody every said he wasn't relevant!! Apart from the public when his CD came out!!!
