You are right, it may not have been unsafe sex, it could have been as accidental as a blood transfusion, a serious injury, or even a broken condom. Both partners having it narrows down the options though.

Making public the condition is all very well, the gestation period of HIV however means there has already been a delay, and in that time if there have been other people exposed to the type of antics Mr Bell and Hickey have been up to means that they are likely to have passed on the virus to a whole new group of people, ones that may not be so open about discussing it to their mates.

Any wake up call like this that publicises the risks of unprotected sex appears to be dismissed by the usual suspects posting on threads as this.
HIV is very well suited to jump across the skin gap, its chances of spreading are greatly increased through those unable to grasp the basic idea of putting on a condom, much less leaving sexual gratification to the cavities that are designed for it.
