why don't any soap characters have any long term permanent injuries?

Im looking forward to seeing the aftermath of the crash episode tonight on C4 (having unfortunately missed last nights E4 episode) But does anyone wonder why nowadays any character who is involved in any kind of accident never has any long term injuries at all as a result. Does anyone remember Emmerdale during the plane crash all those years ago when Chris Tate was paralysed and up to his death on screen never magically walked again. Another example I can think of from years back was when they gave Steph from Hollyoaks epilepsy as a result from being attacked. I appreciate that nowadays with the wonders of medicene the likelyhood of any character being permanently injured might be few and far between. However would anyone else like to see how a Hollyoaks character involved in the crash would cope with having a permanent injury that would last them all their life.
Spoiler
Or perhaps when Emmerdale Katie has her accident down the mineshaft next week - maybe something permament could
happen as a result of that.

That's what I really liked about Chris Tate because the writers didn't decide to make some magic miracle occur like in other soaps.

Jack got shot in the head and was left paralysed, but now he's fine
Sophie couldnt feel her legs, then one day she woke up and felt them. Her injuries will probably be forgotten soon.
Its not just injuries, illnesses
Ash HO she had mengititis that lasted a week and now she fine and its never mentioned.
