He needed the development this year to go with the bigger picture of Stendan. Coming off of that storyline and with Amy gone, he's got nothing and no point for anything they do with him after. And I'll always be bitter about January and Jubilee Week, and just getting tossed Doug. Doug.
And we can't even know for sure Kieron won't leave. That he isn't.
Like I've said before, I'm not built for soaps if that justifies this.

Well we've no idea what kind of drama post-coma will bring for him. Even if he's not single. You could argue every half of every couple is just there to be a catalyst for the other and their stories. Even if characters are single, they're used to fuel the development of other characters. Esther fuelled Maddie's character and vise versa.
We hate the Stug stuff and might argue it's failed in our eyes, but Doug is there to give Ste a stable relationship (although arguably, not often) and a successful business. And it's not popular with us and we didn't enjoy it, but it gave him dramatic scenes to act, and now he seems to have the kids back and that might bring other stories, so that's good - surely?
Personally unless the main show and Later shows were
completely different from what we saw, no, Ste wouldn't have fitted in this year's Later. I highly doubt Kieron will leave any time soon, he's had years of grittiness and I'm sure that will continue long after Brendan's gone. It might even include a Later with a fitting story for him involving something which is out of the realmns of speculation right now!.
You don't have to shut up, I just think you're setting yourself up for disappointment this way! Ultimately it is the nature of soap, for better or for worse, but it's enjoyable escapism TV for 30 minutes every week-night designed to make people tune in every night to follow the twists and turns and make them desperate for killers to be discovered or characters to consummate their feelings and that's not going to change. It's not an issue that exists just for this story. I'm sure every fan of every soap would tell you the same.
