Indeed it's 7 because it suited Microsoft to be so, no other reason, windows 3 was just a polished version is 1 and 2.

It wasn't the seventh retail edition of windows, even Windows guys such as Paul Thurrott agrees that it makes no sense.
Aren't they all just polished versions of each other then? So we should still be on windows 1. Until they kill the name windows altogether, and use something like doorway, skirting board, etc then they can go up a number. There i believe that settles the argument!

Depends how you look at things with Windows

Windows 1
Windows 2
Windows 3
Windows 95 and 98 and ME (Windows 4)
Windows XP (Windows 5)
Windows Vista (Windows 6)
Windows 7
Windows 8

Makes perfect sense to me.

Windows 1
Windows 2
Windows 3
Windows 4 - NT
Windows 5 - 2000 & XP
Windows 6 - Vista
Windows 7
Windows 8

Windiws 7 is not the seventh version of windows, didn't even run a seventh version of the NT kernel, no one could explain where the 7 came from.

Using that logic Windows 7 should have been Windows 6 still, they made it 7 to distance themself from Vista, not because it is actually 7 IMO.

At least there's a lot of them, Apple is running out of wild felines, the next OSX will have to be called Hello Kitty.
Or Alley Cat, Tom Cat, Kitty, Domestic Cat...

98 and ME were polished versions of 95. And Windows 7 was used for marketing reasons to get away from Vista. Seem logical - from a marketing view.
Windows ME wasn't polished. In fact calling it a Windows version is rather generous Anyone remember Windows CEMENT?

Is it better than Windows Vista, ME and 8 combined?

Thought you would have gone with Top Cat!

I am one of the few people that actually liked Windows ME and found it good...never had problems with it and found it better than 98 and could never understand why people didn't like it.

Radiator is the best version ever as not only does it radiate a great OS it also warms your room at the same time. Just be careful using it in an Igloo!

Well, yeah...marketing - but they can justify it that was as well...maybe they though 7 just sounded better than 6

I had forgotten about it So you were one of three people who found Windows Mistake Edition ok then? Has Microsoft Radiator already been released then? Must ask them in PC World

OK, I admit to being a bit of a grump these days, but why are we seeing platforms, software, OS's etc wuth such kiddy names?

Ice cream sandwich
Jelly Bean
Raspberry Pi.

What's the thinking behind it? Indeed is there any?
I rather like them. Apple use cat names for their OS updates (Panther, Lion etc.) and Google use deserts. I also think that the Raspberry Pi is an inspired name

I guess we could just call is OS version 10.8 or Google Mobile OS version 4.2 but frankly that's boring to me. A codename is a nice and more human way to identify the OS or device.

Froyo reminds me of Larry Sanders! He was always eating it.

Or 6.1 if the naming system was done the Apple way, with Service Pack 1 being 6.1.2, SP2 (if there was such a thing) being 6.1.3 and so on. That then would make Windows 8 Windows 6.3.

You've just put me in mind of the UK video version of Leona's 'Bleeding Love' where she's fondly writhing against a radiator. Now that would be a stroke of genius if Microsoft adopted Windows Radiator as a name; and used the appropriate snippet of 'Bleeding Love' for promo purposes.

I like the names for the Android operating system. Like the fact there's a food theme going on. I suppose when they get to 'Y' it will no doubt contain the word Yogurt?

As for Apple's OS. They could go for Pink Panther or even Bagpuss.

Android is named alphebetically with each version. Its also name after a desert.

So it goes, A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J,K
Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice cream sandwich, Jelly bean, Key lime pie etc...

Not really kiddy names, and like mentioned above there are still version numbers
Is my Google Earth faulty? I can't find any deserts with these names?
