So Mas follows up by asking Syed if he's sure. And if he's OK. And Syed is, for the first time in the whole storyline, absolutely sure and absolutely fine. That his destiny is to be a gay Muslim. He didn't choose either of these things. And being those two things is OK. He is not damaged, he is not wrong, he is not confused, he is not sick, he is not going against God's will. He is fine. And his parents really don't need to worry about him. And he says it with such conviction, such warmth, it's like he's believing it himself for the first time. He has finally accepted who he really is and knows with complete certainty that he will be fine because it is God's will and he knows he can put all his trust in that.”
Amazing!

Again, the community, their values, can't be changed, or derailed. Staying in the family, choosing to live by their rules, means that Bushra, and by extension, cultural tradition, will dictate everything in his life, right down to the type of meat he buys. Even his mother is controlled by this - strong, force of nature Zainab is a slave to Bushra, to expectations, to appearances. Another uncoupling in Syed's head - if they can't be changed, then I have to change to fit in. And if I can't change, then I will never fit in...
...and then Zainab pipes up with the second sentence, thus laying the answer out on a plate. Out there IS someone who you will fit with, who will feel right, and good, and who you won't have to pretend with. The one person who is right for you. Z's homophobia and basic inability to understand that Syed feels genuine love for Christian mean that it doesn't even occur to her that Syed's thoughts would immediately turn to him. And thus she unwittingly sows the seed that makes what's to come ALL about Christian.”
More brilliance.

Last Monday, the fabulous Pete Lawson, sneaked in a lovely Chryed mention in the EE episode of that day.
The next day, walking from work to the station, inspiration hit... and I couldn't get home fast enough to write down what went on in my head. Was late for amdram rehearsals and all...
Thought this weekend was probably a good occasion to post it.
It's only a little, short thing... not anything like all the epic fic we've received earlier this weekend, but I hope you like it. There may be another little thing following on... still working on that.
Here you go... One more time : )”
Wonderful, thanks so much
Zoetje, really looking forward to reading this!

. Love the opening lines!

And this is Syed's quiet goodbye. Reinforcing, before he leaves it all behind, that he loves his family and his faith. He wants his parents to know this. The script also specifies that he kisses them both on the forehead - a poignant mirroring of Christian kissing him goodbye at his wedding - all goodbye kisses full of love. Christian kisses Syed goodbye because despite loving him, and knowing Syed loves him too, he realises that they cannot be together. In the same way that Syed still loves his parents, and knows they love him, but realises that he can't live in the way they want him to. I thought it was interesting when Nick was talking about Syed handing Tam the Qur'an and used the word 'rejection' but then said, 'of sorts', because it is not a rejection at all. He makes it very clear that he is not rejecting his family or their values or his faith - he is just choosing something else. In the end it's not even really a decision. He just stops trying to fight what he wanted and needed all along. Syed has been struggling all his life, and his calmness reflects that this isn't a struggle, this isn't a big angsty moment of suffering and pain. Yes, of course it isn't easy, but it is easier because it's what was meant to happen.”
Loving all of these posts!

And this is the perfect end to a perfect scene. It leaves Zee and Mas with the dish that Syed has cooked trapped in the cultural expectations that they conform to. Bushra is there, casting a critical eye over the dish Syed has prepared, already looking for things to find fault with, just like the community are there watching their lives, ready to criticise and point and tut and shame people into conforming.
The amazing thing is that they carry on with the dinner. It doesn't even matter that Syed is no longer there. The food is prepared, the community are gathered, the table is laid and they still all sit down to eat. It's a farce, a pretence, a sham. I suspect, even after Z&M realise Syed's gone, see him with Christian and then come back inside, they plaster on their fake smiles and continue with the meal. Their values, their lives, their world has not changed one bit. Syed doesn't fit in, so he has to leave. There's no sense of adjusting their beliefs to accommodate difference.
And outside the house, outside their straight jacketed little world of unshakable rules and keeping up appearances, Syed is choosing a different path. He's coming to his own conclusions, making his own choices, taking some parts of what he's been brought up to believe, but rejecting others and adding new ideas. And having an extraordinarily athletic and comprehensive marathon session in bed with his fit, gorgeous, experienced and imaginative boyfriend.
And here endeth my analysis lecture for today. *bows*
