Return!her, anyway. A couple of Danny and Syed's scenes didn't want to make me stab my eyes out, which I can't say for any of Amira and Syed's scenes after she came back. I genuinely thought the stuff on the stag night was very good. I can't think of a single decent Amira/Syed scene after her return. The one where they got divorced- but even then Syed's doing it against her wishes. Sigh.

I hated the storyline, but I didn't really have anything against Danny as a character. He did what he was supposed to do. He was meant to be a creepy, slimy snake. I'm pretty sure EE were still trying to make me sympathise with Amira. No, just no.

I will never forget that episode in late 2011, around the Yusef stuff, where I'd swear they were doing it deliberately to take the piss - every single time he opened his mouth they would cut away or someone else would interrupt him.

I could be wrong but I don't think even elphie was with me on that one, though she, and many others hovered in the middle for quite a while

I definitely remember standing all by myself on the Amira side of the room

Don't get me wrong, I hated DTW and still want to throw up when I see him on screen now, but he wasn't anywhere near as annoying as Amira. My dislike of him stems pretty much entirely from what he did to Chryed, I wouldn't hate him half as much if he'd done the same to another couple I didn't care about, whereas I loathed Amira before Chryed even existed

It literally must've been the most frustrating time for Marc. I kind of think this is where Syed began to crumble. All the complexities of his character just became non existent and for all intents and purposes he became Amira's shadow. Though i do remember from around this time some amazing scenes between him and Tam after Zainab's supposed suicide attempt. But they were an exception obviously.

Suppose the Danny hatred was still fresh at that point, though.

I think it's better for a character to be loathsome than irritating, though. I don't believe that about people, but fictional characters: absolutely.

Wow. Wonder why he quit shortly after this...

I'm not sure if this is unpopular or not. Probably won't get lynched for it, regardless. But this period is genuinely the WORST Chryed (I know it's just Syed, but it reflects on the Chryed story so badly) for me. It's the only point at which I had to stop watching because I found it so bad. The exit storyline only really had my wrath from the twist onwards, and I enjoyed their last two episodes. From the moment Christian left until the moment he came back, I hated every moment Syed was onscreen during that period. Pretty sure all he got to say during that period was 'Mum...' 'Amira...' 'Coming!' And he never got to finish a sentence, I swear to God.

At least during the exit storyline, Marc knew he was free soon.

Still surprises me how strongly people feel about the "bad times"... oh gosh yes, we've had rubbish, total and utter rubbish, but we also had brilliance, maybe too little and too far between, but it was there. I wouldn't have wanted to miss it for anything.
Seriously, I've cried, I've cursed, I've thrown things at the tv, my heart ached, sometime it ached so much I thought it would never get better, but ... they got through it in the end. They survived, they had a good ending, they are now happy together. If they can forgive, shouldn't we?
Things were done that were near unforgivable, I've not forgotten that. Maybe I mellowed, my head canon puts them in a good place now. People in real relationships go through rubbish too, and let's not forget, it's a soap!

I would recommend anyone, seriously, to watch all of it, because it's their story, like it or not, it is.

I've lost the post I was going to quote, but just to go off on a slight tangent about Syed wanting to get caught...it occured to me last time I watched their last episode that when Christian is going off on his rant about all the times Syed has lied to him, saying something like "yes, I'll tell my parents, but only when the time's right" and Syed interrupts saying "and I did" but actually, he didn't. Zainab found out from Christian, Masood saw them kissing/having sex, Amira saw the graffitti and Tam found out when it all kicked off after that. So yeah, I think Syed definitely wanted to be caught, cos he knew deep down he wanted to be with Christian but for all kinds of reasons couldn't bring himself to take that step and come out by himself #passiveaggressive :sleep:

Oh God, I remember that episode/that period too. It really was Every.Single. Time! And just when a talking Syed was so much needed and when the possibilities to develop him away from Christian were there just begging to be realised.
Reading those scripts and filming that must've been just about when Marc decided he'd had enough I reckon. :sleep:

With regards to Chryed now (yes, I know that was this morning but I spent most of the day still thinking about it) I think Christian forgave Syed relatively easily for the DTW thing, but I think what really hurt him and what Syed had to spend a lot of time in America working on was the lying and the fear/belief he wasn't good enough/didn't deserve to be happy which led him to question the whole thing (seen on screen as the inability to say ILY). But now happy in their settled life, away from his family and failures and a need to prove himself, Syed is very content, never lies and they know each other so well they call each other out even when there's a half lie, white lie or exaggeration. And I have no doubt that Syed has no trouble saying ILY these days and regularly shows Christian quite how much.

I remember the time when everyone first worked out what my username meant! I did grow quite fond of this name

BIBs: Ugh, I'm so nervous to watch the parts I've never ventured into... I've heard it gets kind of terrible towards the end. Not sure if I'll be able to stomach it but I'll give it a go

Yeah, I agree. Putting Syed back in the sham was just such a terrible decision, for so many reasons. Apart from the fact that it meant he was with Amira in pretty much every scene, it regressed Syed's character so much when, with Christian gone, it was actually the perfect time to develop him further. At that point it would actually have made sense for him to get involved with a DTW type and could have been quite interesting to watch...such a waste

Yeah, I agree. I don't really think Syed 'never lies', I think it's always going to be in his nature to play down his problems and not 'bother' other people with them, but I really hope he at least doesn't let it get to the point where he causes genuine hurt and damage.

BiB: this was even worse than the twist for me. Oh my God, it's so goddamn dreadful. He will beg Christian to come home, constantly ring him, text him, ask Lucy to act as a go-between, tell him he wants them to be a family, but he won't say 'I love you'. Until he suddenly can, for no reason. Cannot believe people got paid to write that crap.

(paraphrased) Christian: He hasn't said 'I love you' in a long time.
Me: HE SAID IT TWO EPISODES AGO. YOU PROBABLY STILL HAVE THE VOICEMAIL ON YOUR PHONE. JESUS CHRIST.

And, yes, I'm aware that he probably meant when he said it and Christian believed it, but that's not what the line says!

Of course Syed regularly says 'I love you'. He always did! He said it as much as Christian (I think if you discount the 'affair' days and the exit storyline, Syed says it MORE than Christian). It literally made no sense.

Wow just started taking meg's quiz again and after getting less than 4 of the first 10 questions right I gave up. The shame!!

To be honest the only things I've re-watched recently are the wedding ceremony and the last ep. I couldn't tell you the last time I watched anything else. Not coz I don't want to. There's so much great stuff, but just because I haven't had time. I also find it kinda weird seeing Johnny as Christian now having been lucky enough to see him in a few other roles and meet him as Johnny a few times too. Watching Chryed now I cant help squeeing internally and drifting off to memories of 3 hugs and a whole lotta love
