Why have the female contestants done so badly?
I have to admit I haven't been watching this series religiously, but even I was shocked to see Ella go out as I thought she was a frontrunner to win. Does anyone else know why the female contestants have done so badly this series? Throughout all the series if a female hasn't won - they have at least finished in the top 5/top 4.

Leona and Alexander Burke both won
Also Little Mix won last year This series isn't about talent, even more so than in other years |

I'm my opinion, they've all been pretty insipid this year. The boys are more likeable and talented. I didn't vote for a single female act this year. Jade bored me with her "I live in a tower block" sob story, Carolynne was shafted with a terrible song, Ella was a bit too dull despite her obvious talent and Lucy was a bit samey.

Not that great. Ella was the only good one.

I'm not sure what happened this year, as I honestly felt the female performers were collectively stronger than the male performers. It's a shame that Lucy had to drop out as, with hindsight, I think the public might have supported her to the final. |

Tulisa's popularity really nosedived this season. You could be onto something there, B-29.

They never do that well. If you look at the top 3 of all 9 series, only 6 out of 27 have been female.
It didn't help that this year the producers seemed hell bent on booting out all the girls the second they hit the bottom 2. They've got the sausage fest they so desired. |

Still a girl is able to win the X-factor, but the voting people are mostly teenage girls wasting the money. In Germany there's Idol, out of 8 series they had only one female winner. Interesting is Switzerland, we had never a male winner in casting shows.

At least X Factor doesn't have an American Idol problem with female singers!

The boys were just better. Nothing wrong with that.

I voted for Ella every week but I didn't think at any stage she was a certainty to win the show and in the last couple of weeks I thought she was at greater risk of leaving because of how unpredictable the bottom two was becoming.
I think I'm right in saying that no act under about the age of 18 has ever won the show so I wasn't surprised that she didn't get to the final. I thought in fact she was going to leave in the semi-final so last night was quite a surprise particularly with James also in the bottom two. The final 12 of 2006 were not as strong as subsequent years. The girls category of 2007 was probably the weakest. Alexandra Burke was successful at what she did but peaked at the right time that year. Stacey Solomon and Rebecca Ferguson are probably the best two female solo singers of recent years on the show. I did think Stacey was underrated on the show and could have won it though she didn't have many other stand out performances besides the 'Queen' song she sung. Lucy might have reached the final had she stayed in and would have at least been the underdog from the girls category as with Rylan and Christopher for the boys and the overs. |

Because the only voters left are teenage girls?
![]() It was obvious Ella was doomed from the moment they went for the Helen Shapiro styled hair and makeup. |

Jade should have been saved in the sing off.
Lucy left for reasons beyond her control. (Which we can't talk about) Ella, IMO, did too many slow songs which made it harder for her to connect with a young audience. I wish Melanie had been saved in the sing off. Last edited by strictmachine : 19-11-2012 at 22:36. Reason: addition |

The girls were miscast this year, as were the boys last year.
If Spraggan hadnt dropped out though I imagine either she or Ella would have gone top 5 over one of the other acts that now remain. There would have been a "panic vote for the other girl" moment after the first one went out. As it happened Jade was the early sacrifice but Ella was then isolated. I'd expect her vote to've had a boost the week after Jade went out though for the reasons I gave above. |
