It goes to a blank screen when I select it and it crashes the player! Anyone else have these problems?”

As a guess I would imagine if its anything like the Sony BDPs370 then to use US Netflix, as well as unblock-us you will need to have a US Netflix account to make it work on your player.
It will not work if your using a UK account.

I am not sure if it is that because I didn't even get to the sign in stage.

Have you tried going to unblock-us site and clicking on 'Check Service'?
Also on the 'How To Setup' page, what region is the region selector set at?

Yep done that. I ended up having to reset the Blu ray to factory default for it to show the US content. All the other apps work but aren't much use to me. Hulu will stream demo videos but Hulu Plus requires a US credit card so that is useless. Netflix is there but will give a blank screen when selected and will cause the player to crash.

What advantages does a VPN have, and why should I trial it? In short, what exactly is a VPN?

Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu etc are region based due to licensing issues so when your device accesses their sites your IP address tells them if your in the correct region to use their service.
What a VPN does is tricks those services into thinking you are located in those regions by altering your IP address to one for that particular service.
So using unblock-us alongside Netflix allows you to choose which Netflix region that you would like to use from a number of different regions ie US, Canada, Sweden, UK, Brazil etc at the touch of a button using your existing Netflix account.

You will have access to content which is Geo locked to other Countries. For example Hulu which has a lot of content from the main American TV networks is only officially available to those in the US meaning with a VPN you could watch content that is not even being shown on UK TV yet or is only available on subscription channels in the UK. With Netflix content differs region by region so a VPN could give content that isn't available on the UK version.

I do like Netflix, it has a good selection of Anime and Breaking Bad! But I think it's search function is poor, unless you know what you want to watch then you are pretty stuffed (apart from the 20 or so films it pre-selects for you in each section on the front screen).

Never seen the Killing, but with moves like this it definitely seems like some exciting times ahead for Netflix.

I browse the catalogue on my netbook - and then select them by name on my Panasonic Bluray player's client.

This show is brilliant. You should definitely watch the first 2 seasons (available on Netflix US).

Yes, Season 1 and 2 of "The Killing" were very good.
I believe the original Danish series is available on Netflix DK. That is also excellent!
