Nokia's mapping app 'Here' is now available in iTunes.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/here...&affId=1503186

apparently it's very good according to journo's anyway. Nokia bought NavTeq a few years back and their mapping solution is generally accepted to be the best in the business.

it's available for android too. but only from the amazon app store.

I agree, Nokia have had the best sat nav for a while now. I remember it was even good back in 2009

it is very good. as a nokia user you kind of forget that you don't necessarily have the right to expect a full on sat nav in your phone with free worldwide map updates for life.

i don't know how to take the iTunes reviews. in the press reviews are positive. and i expected the fanbois to hate it. so i don't know.

i'll put it on my nexus later i guess and see for myself.

doesn't seem to be getting good reviews.

TBH, I haven't found the 'perfect' sat nav yet. Google maps is awesome for content but its routing can be a bizzair sometimes and it doesn't auto re-route even though it has free live traffic feed and there is no option for speed cameras.

Nokia is better in all these areas but loses out on content.

I've just installed it on my iPhone 5.

It's nice and detailed and there are lots of options including a live traffic view and the ability to save a map area.

The design is OKAY and the app is a bit sluggish when panning and zooming. There's an odd 'here' button permanently at the bottom which goes straight to the 'about' screen. It seems like an odd permanent link to have.

It's pants. Just a wrapped html5 web app. Delete & forget it ( I do like Nokia though).

Further to my previous post:

Is it better than what Apple has to offer? Of course it is. Have a look at these side by side screenshots I took of the same area at roughly the same zoom level.

http://i469.photobucket.com/albums/r...comparison.jpg

The difference in the level of detail is incredible. And it shows another deficiency of Apple's Maps, something I've mentioned before - bad font scaling that gives you no idea of major towns. You can also see that the Apple version is lacking some road numbers, A-roads aren't a different colour, rail lines and stations aren't visible at that zoom level, etc etc

I'm not convinced that Apple's Maps will ever be fit for purpose.

I had a Nokia N82 a few years back. Aside from the screen being a bit small, that phone was brilliant as a sat nav. Nokia allowed you to load all the maps you wanted for free, and you just paid for Turn by Turn Navigation. I had UK on there permanently, and you could buy a week or a couple of weeks when you were away somewhere on holiday. We pitted it up against Tom Tom driving through Tennessee and only the Tom Tom got lost, Nokia maps was solid as a rock!

Turn by turn is now free too. It's really a full on sat nav.

I've installed it on my nexus 7.

It's very good. Great maps and the points of interest are very slick too.

I'm still waiting for all the Cambridge POIs I submitted corrections for to be fixed...

The consensus seems to be that these maps are good in Europe, but not so good in the US.

Sat view is a disappointment. Same as google, older than apple, image wise. I like the traffic view on the M25 though.

Looking at my road it's much newer than google and apple. It's not as good as on the Windows or Nokia platforms though.

I use my Nokia phone sat-nav for simple A to B trips and locating postcodes. For serious routing I still use my trusty old Garmin SP2610.

Google navigation and maps is still more superior on the android versions than iOS however.

Aye but the USP of Nokia mapping over Google and iOS is that it does not track you for the benefit of their partners in advertising nor charge you for mapping data downloads as you go.

It's not really very good. It has not very clear raster mapping, it does not use colour coding to distinguish between motorways, primary A roads and non primary A roads, and it looks like it also includes POI data which is two years or more out of date.

It's really frustrating that Apple Maps is so crap. If it had decent data, and colour coded road classifications to go with its good looks and vector engine it would be bloody brilliant. Sadly, it's a big if right now.

I would have thought it referenced the same backend data as the Symbian and WP maps.

Spent a little time last night comparing the S^3 maps against the iOS maps, as others have said, in the UK at least iOS is pretty poor in comparison.

Will have to compare "Here" on the 4S against Drive on my 808.

There are some irritating mistakes on *all* of the mapping solutions, but thats purely down to them not being able to keep everything bang up to date.
