Hey there.

I will soon be having TalkTalk phone, broadband and TV installed and will be using TalkTalk broadband as a backup internet connection,

However I will only be able to get around 2-3Mb via TalkTalk broadband, so was wondering if the YouView box would work if I connected the box to Virgin's internet connection?

I will be switching to TalkTalk FTTC as a main connection once/if it becomes available.

Many thanks.

The youview box will work but you will not be able to get any tv boosts or tv gift.
You may be able to get iplayer , itvplayer , 4od and demand5.

TalkTalk say that you need a minimum of 4Mbps to get their Entertainment Boost (which includes the Sky channels). I would say that is an absolute minimum. My router pulls in a consistent 12Mbps, but it is connected to the box by home plugs, which reduce the effective speed slightly. The resultant sound and pictures are actually pretty well indistinguishable from those from the transmitter, but the online stuff is prone to very occasional freezing and a little blocking on some of the channels. I am inclined to put this down to teething troubles at the moment. It isn't a big problem and I should think it will clear up as the platform (and broadband) develops. On your projected 2-3Mbps, you should still be able to get LoveFilm and, I think, the catch-up services.

Hi Skyloverforlife,

If a TalkTalk Supplied Youview box is connected to another suppliers line the Youview Players section (On Demand content such as Iplayer, ITV Player 4OD Demand5) will still work, as will the freeview as its delivered via the Aerial. You will still be able to utilise some of the IP based content but not all.

If connecting to your virgin line, You wont have any access the TalKTalk Player, which includes the TV Gift, Boosts and a number of free to air IPTV channels (ABC on Demand, Warner on Demand etc.).

If you do get a consistent 3mb on your TT line you will still get the Youview Player (On Demand as above). You will also get the TalkTalkPlayer, TV Gift and the Free On Demand content it contains (ABC, Warner etc). You will not however meet the minimum speed requirement for the TV boosts (the premium pad for content).

As such its likely you will get more content delivered by connecting to the TT line.

Regards
