The Ratings Thread (Part 43)
Quote:
On one hand this is a bit desperate but it's also quite interesting. ABC are claiming to be the #1 network in November excluding sports coverage. They have 4 of the top 10 non sports shows among adults 18-49.
I guess the point they are making is that their entertainment division is actually doing alright compared to their rivals who are boosted by massive rating NFL overruns (CBS/FOX), World Series Baseball (FOX) and mainly NBC's Sunday Night Football. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/201...ytheNumbers%29 |

Sorry if already reported but Cowboy Builders is back a week on Thursday at 9pm on C5. Hopefully does better than last time. BBC1 at least is weak with 'Goodnight Britain' but it will be up against I'm a Celebrity. I see later weeks will have easier competition though Quote:
Monday 19th November Overnights
BBC One 09:15- Neighbourhood Rules: 1.46m (28.3%) 10:00- Homes Under The Hammers: 1.64m (28.9%) ITV1 09:25- The Jeremy Kyle Show: 1.29m (23.9%) |

No surprise but Pointless has been renewed for 183 episodes, which includes three daytime series and one six part celeb series.

Not sure if these were posted in the Monday wrap up but from @paul_brassey on Twitter some gameshow ratings:
The Weakest Link 0.21 (3%) Countdown 0.50 (7%) 1001 Things you should know0.67 (8%) Deal or No Deal 1.4 (13%) Breakaway 1.4 (11%) Chase 3.3 (21%) Pointless 3.1 (19%) Eggheads 1.8 (9%) University Challenge 3.1 (13%) Only Connect 0.86 (3%) (not sure if ITV1/C4 ratings include +1 - I suspect they do) |

http://www.c21media.net/archives/93720 Pleased to see Pointless cracking 3m yesterday (and big thanks to rzt for posting such a comprehensive round-up). It'll be interesting to see how Pointless and The Chase fare against each other next year when Pointless will have a lead-in from general audience programmes instead of unwatched kids' shows. Not that The Chase was getting a huge lead-in from Midsomer Murders. |

US Final Ratings - Monday 19th November
ABC:
8pm - Dancing With The Stars - 14.28m (2.4) 10pm - Castle - 10.36m (2.0) CBS: 8pm - How I Met Your Mother - 7.45m (2.9) 8.30pm - Two and a Half Men (R) - 6.02m (2.0) 9pm - 2 Broke Girls - 9.74m (3.4) 9.30pm - Mike & Molly - 9.24m (2.9) FOX: 8pm - Bones - 7.11m (2.0) 9pm - The Mob Doctor - 3.08m (0.9) NBC: 8pm - The Voice - 10.60m (3.7) 10pm - Revolution - 7.02m (2.6) tvbythenumbers A generally flat night for most broadcasters. Dancing With The Stars was up a few tenths from last week as was Two Broke Girls. A Two and a Half Men repeat performed slightly better than the now cancelled Partners. The Voice fell sharply to a Monday season low, down 16% or seven tenths of a point to a 3.7. Prior to this week the show had been steady in the mid 4's through the auditions, battle rounds and "playoffs". Still great for NBC though and some kind of drop was probably to be expected. Even better news was that Revolution followed at 10pm and held a steady 2.6 despite the drop off for its lead-in. |

This episode of Some Girls was not that terrible. The show is growing on me, but still is problematic.

Nice to see C5 get a Channel of the Year nomination from Broadcast for the first time since at least 2007. Well deserved. I don't suspect they will win but it's nice that a hard working team that scarcely gets any credit for what they do is being recognised in some way. Quote:

Leading with repeats as opposed to new episodes = poor form. Leading with repeats when you're advertising something as "new" with a voiceover that refers to "all new episodes" = extremely poor form. |

Deal or No Deal 1.4 (13%)
Breakaway 1.4 (11%) I think if one of C4's new gameshows was to take off then that may well be that for Deal. I know what you're probably thinking: I've lost it, 13% share for Channel 4 is not to be sniffed at, Deal should run forever until Noel gets a better offer etc. But before you call the men in white coats, let's have a quick look at the ratings trajectory over the years: Quote:
Monday 21st November 2005: 2.64m [official] I'm guessing Deal is not the sort of show to add a ton of viewers on timeshift, so that evidence would appear to be pretty conclusive. It's only going one way. And bosses decided it could no longer sustain four showings a day excluding +1 channels recently with the 6pm rerun on 4Seven coming to an end on November 9. It had previously performed well in a similar slot for More4.Monday 20th November 2006: 3.71m [official] Monday 19th November 2007: 2.74m (exc. +1) [official] Monday 17th November 2008: 2.47m (exc. +1) [official] November 16th November 2009: 2.29m (exc. +1) [official] November 15th November 2010: 2.04m (exc. +1) [official] November 21st November 2011: 1.81m (exc. +1) [official] Monday 19th November 2012: 1.4m (inc. +1) [overnight] Do C4 really want Deal to limp on for a few more years as the ratings sink further and further until it outstays its welcome like Weakest Link? How would that fit into the ongoing creative renewal? Furthermore, I can only see things getting worse for Deal in the post-CBBC era with BBC One likely to emerge much more powerful across that timeslot, taking viewers away from other channels. So it might pay to be a little ruthless now in order to establish something that's got more longevity in that slot, before it's too late. C4 say they are serious about daytime. But their flagship daytime show has lost nearly 50% of its audience in 5 years and they respond by commissioning celebrity specials in primetime about 4 years too late! Think it's time to consign the "Dream Factory" to TV heaven. It's had a good run. |

Even better news was that Revolution followed at 10pm and held a steady 2.6 despite the drop off for its lead-in. Speaking of Castle, even if the numbers are down from last season, it is the most stagnant season for a drama series so far. The total viewers are still flirting around 10m and they get 1.9 and 2.0 virtually every week. That number may look concerning, but because Castle has secured a syndication deal, TVbyTN said that a renewal is more likely scenario now. As for Body of Proof, their third season in 2013 will be the crucial point for the show. Then again, ABC has boasted how the drama skews older audiences in the US and is doing really well internationally. Also, didn't they win the California Film Tax Credit? Don't know if that will do much in the long run (after season 3). 2 Broke Girls is a fighter for Monday nights as they grew almost a point-and-half from a 2 1/2 Men repeat lead-in. Although, it is interesting that CBS comedies are not as dominant as they were since 2 1/2 Men got out of the picture. It is even more surprising that none of CBS shows last night got over 10m total viewers, since they always gloat on how they are strong on that area, as well as 25-54 demo. Bones is hanging in there, but what is FOX trying to prove with The Mob Doctor? Numbers didn't get any better and advertisers would be really pissed off seeing those results week to week. Just dump it to Saturdays after COPS ! As for The CW, they have given up on Mondays until The Carrie Diaries start in January. Link (table): http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2012/11/...mber-2012.html Link (article): http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2012/11/...r-triumph.html Over in Australia, The X Factor Finals on Seven attracted 1.88m with The Winner Announced receiving 1.92m. Although, TV Tonight is saying the show could be down to 1.87m in finals, whilst The Winner Announced segment is expected to be adjusted up to 2.16m. Of course, they dominated the three key adult demos (16-39, 18-49, 25-54) as well. Grimm premiered with 937k (at overnight numbers), whilst Smash finale had 425k. Grimm also had a quite strong start in the demos. Should Seven carry on with Smash, despite the second season airing on Soho (Foxtel) again for the Australian first run? |

Removing Two and a Half Men from Mondays did weaken the night but the competition is much stronger than it used to be especially in the demo from The Voice. I like 2 Broke Girls but it should have moved to Thursdays but I wonder if the gains CBS has gotten on Thursdays offset the losses on Mondays? Rules of Engagement and eventually Friend Me can't come soon enough.
Also, I wonder if this may be HIMYM's final season as it's down from last season, it is possible that CBS give it a final season to wrap things up. |
