Brilliant rating for Sports Personality Of The Year and that peak was huge. But Strictly topping the night? Didn't see that one coming.

Another memorable day for CH5. The Da Vinci Code rates well every single time it's on and yesterday was no exception:

11:45 Mr. St. Nick: 556k (5.9%)
13:30 Battle of the Bulbs: 849k (7.7%)
15:15 All I Want for Christmas: 1.22m (8.4%)
17:00 The Da Vinci Code: 1.60m (7.2%)
20:00 Click: 1.29m (4.7%)
22:00 Zack and Miri Make a Porno: 728k (4.9%)

Between 12pm-12am, C5 (main channel inc. +1) averaged a 6.5% share of all television viewing. Over the same period, BBC Two averaged 5.5%. However, C4 (inc. +1) topped both with a 7.2% share thanks largely to the superb performance of early evening film Deck the Halls (2.38m/12.3%).

Strictly was always going to win, but I did wonder what the late news on BBC1 would get. I could see 9m, anyone know what it did get?

I think ITV thought very wisely that with Olympic fever if they did compete their shows would come off second best unlike previous years. Makes more sense not to waste a big show against SPOTY this year.

Really? Can we not celebrate SPOTY's success without cheap shots at ITV, TXF, etc?

So BBC1 will have averaged over 10m, indeed nearer 11m, between 6.50pm and at least 10.30pm.

That doesn't happen much these days!

longer show probably meant people were dipping in and out. I know a few people who were getting bored waiting for the phone lines to open. Also not everybody likes all sports, so probably only tuned in to see their favourites

good night for the Beeb

The SPOTY winner did in his speech!

He deserves a knighthood for that alone....

he wasn't taking cheap shots at those shows, just showing his gratitude that people still found in the themselves to vote again (after weeks of doing the same for IAC and TXF)

I thought SPOTY would win due to Olympic fever and Strictly being on earlier than usual. Mind you getting that rating for 3 hours is no mean feat. Must have been BBC1's best Sunday since The Olympics?

As I love to mention Andy Murray's Wimbledon defeat averaged 11m for 5 hours worth of programming.

That's the truly impressive rating of the year, what other programme has had that high an average for that long?

Must be BBC1's best night since The Olympics. I think it shows that people are interested in the results only. Should have just done that at 10pm!

Really? Do you have a ratings breakdown for Sport's Personality?
