I thought it was unusual because in the winter, on a Sunday, we would be seeing 30m total audience.

Still, as mentioned before, staggering figure.
Earlier in the evening yes, but 30 million total audience at 10:25pm is very rare.

Exactly, while people are excited by its high ratings, it is obviously down to the fact that it was an Olympic year and it was going to be a close competition. That is the reason for the high rating and it obviously won't be on the same scale next year.
the question is will the Olympic Superstars, be one step too far, or will it produce a 10 million average?

judging by the tone of the promo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfKLSs_Yqhc

im not so sure it will

Superstars will have done very well if it gets 6m in the overnights. The tone of the promo? It's just a bit of fun.

I thought it was going to be a bit more serious, the tone suggests "Olympians compete at their kids school sports day", then a test to find out which of them is the true sports all rounder.

But Superstars is, and always was, just a television programme. It's not a serious sports event. It's a light entertainment show.

Here it is in 1980. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch_OawiLG6s

Think of it as cut from the same cloth as World's Strongest Man.

I'm sure, though, that our competitve Olympians will be going all out to be the Superstars champion.

For those yesterday who were suggesting "Merlin" wouldn't be too dark and harrowing on Christmas Eve, and who are hoping for a happy ending may like to read the link below. Warning: It does contain speculated spoilers.

http://scifibulletin.com/uk-tv/merli...-heart-broken/

Now, with regards to that link and its contents, who thinks the BBC may receive many complaints regarding the scheduling as they comfort their children as they go to bed on the most magical night of the year in tears?

I just worry that its going to end up making our great Olympians look a little silly.

It's not essential to read the spoilers but the reason I posted it in the ratings thread is due largely, to whether the ratings of the final episode on Christmas Eve, reflects the level of complaints that may be made to the BBC. The BBC seem to be promoting the spirit of Christmas yet schedule something that is going to destroy that very same spirit they are attempting to promote!

But, Charnham, I respect your concerns and won't post any more spoilers on this thread.

I'd hope not as I know me and him clash over BB, but he is a good poster and his support for smaller channels is to be admired as he is far more of the digital and reality age than reactionaries like me.

Channel 4 have had the Paralympics which have been their highest ratings in a few years, so this must be one of their best years.
Not quite. 2011 Average was 5.9%, the 11 months to November 2012 have given C4 5.6%. Weekly shares are also quite a bid down on last year, especially October and November.

Also now they have The Grand National they have a big rated sports event for the next few years.
It should do well. C4 need more sports like Football or Rugby though.

Wow, the BBC lets websites put complete synopsis' up for Merlin prior to broadcast? If it was an important show (Doctor Who) the beeb would have threatened to sue instantly.

In any case it could be worse, he could have

Sorry Mike, I'm about to steal your thunder....

The X Factor Final consolidated to 11.65 million (39.1%), peaking with 13.05m (42.4%), both figures include +1. This means that The Voice will remain ahead of The X Factor in the end of year charts...
How did the peak share go backwards? And the average share stay the same despite adding on about 700k?

All this gnashing and wailing about Merlin is a bit tiresome. Ditto re Dr Who starting at teatime.

That link to the anguished blog about the final Merlin (all speculation) is actually quite hilarious in how sad it is.

I was a bit miffed that David Renwick killed off Victor in the final One Foot.., it wasn't how I would have ended it, but it wasn't my creation and I got over it - it's television, it's fiction, it's not real!

I bet there will be barely a word said about it in the mainstream media or in the real world, even if the ending is as bleak as the saddoes on the sci-fi forums fear (and they genuinely do seem "afraid"!)

Some folk really do need to get a life....

You complained about Doctor Who being on at teatime initially............... and, the cast member who plays Mordred in Merlin actually said that the scheduling is odd because there will be a lot of very unhappy children on Christmas morning. Programmes are taken seriously by those who watch them. Otherwise there'd be no point in watching them! So for a show like Merlin where those who watch have invested 65 hours of their lives in the characters of course the way it ends is going to affect them.

Can you remember the furore the BBC encountered when they killed off the entire cast of Blakes Seven at Christmas 1980? That wasn't even on on Christmas Eve!

Maybe the point Robbie is making is that in reality there's a bigger picture than when a tv programme is scheduled , given recent news events. Perspective is a wonderful thing
