Screenwatch update:

Emmerdale (8pm) - 7.62m [inc+1]
Celeb - 9.09m [inc+1]
So IAC it up y-o-y again. The same episode last year averaged 7.9m/8.3m (exc/inc +1). Emmerdale's 8pm episode seemed stronger than usual too. Probs about 7.4m excluding +1.

Awful ratings for BBC1, C4 and C5 last night.
Ratings for Eastenders and Emmerdale are not tapechecked.
Update: however Eastenders appears to have run full slot last night, so that 7.10m will be the DS soaps rating too.

Soap timings:
19:00-19:26 Emmerdale
19:29-19:58 Eastenders
20:02-20:28 Emmerdale

Poor for Eastenders. I didn't watch it but the episode got a bad response in the soaps forum so it sounds like it was one to miss.

Confirmation Strictly will air on Christmas Day:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/lat...2-special.html

6 contestants, plus a group routine and Rod Stewart. In previous years there have been 5 contestants, so i'm not sure if 90 minutes is likely, sounds more like 60, or maybe 75?

EDIT: In 2009 it was 6 contestants, so it probably will be a 60 minute show.

Very bad for eastenders. People said the car crash would bring more viewers to the show but it hasn't. Even emmerdale fm beat it

It was a repeat of an episode first aired only a couple of months ago.

You can't do that opposite Ant and Dec and expect to get away with it.

That was when it was made up of the old celebs from the current/past series. Since the Christmas format change in 2010 it has been 5 new celebs and one musical guest over 60 minutes. If they weren't extending the show then why go to the expense of training an extra celebrity and bringing back an number of old contestants for a group dance.

It's interesting to note that EE grew it's audience throughout the half hour whilst ED's fluctuates throught both eps (even taking into account the ad breaks)

Ok, I'm getting twitchy re EE now.

A full hour against Downton on xmas day could backfire, and just isn't necessary in what looks like BBC 1's strongest schedule in years.

Accoirding to Dan Wooton, Itv are going to schedule Mr Selfridge in a Dancing on Ice sandwich and show half of it against Call The Midwife in the New Year: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...elfridges.html

It'll rate badly in such a slot. All the period drama fans will be watch CTM which has a loyal audience of 10million.

Thank you Dancc. That makes it clear why it rated so low yesterday.

Dan Wooton is about as reliable as the Daily Express forcasting the weather.

Dan Wooton could be right. He was recently voted 'Showbiz Reporter of the Year' so he must have some good contacts .

Difficult to tell, but chances are once you exclude commercials, it does go up throughout.

Episode 1 probably had a commercial from 19:10 to 19:14 and finished at 19:26, so the only four accurate 5-minutes are:

19:00 - 7.14m (35.1%)
19:05 - 7.66m (37.0%)
19:15 - 7.83m (37.3%)
19:20 - 7.98m (37.5%) - peak

And episode 2:

20:00 - 7.21m (31.7%)
20:05 - 7.69m (32.5%)
20:10 - 7.11m (31.2%)
20:15 - 7.49m (31.7%)
20:20 - 7.82m (32.3%) - peak
20:25 - 7.26m (31.0%)

It would have finished at 20:26, so remove the last quarter and the break was probably from 20:12 to 20:16, hence two 5-minute segments being deflated.

The priorities are -
- Event Drama
- The biggest names in Comedy
- High-impact Factual
- Contemporary Britain
- Warm-hearted and popular Entertainment
The biggest news in that isn't the marketing strategy, it is the new commissions especially Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
Easily the most ambitious and risky BBC ONE commission in years.

For those unfamiliar with the book, it's a sweeping fantasy novel set during the Napoleonic Wars where two magicians have emerged in Britain. As well as telling the story of their rivalry, it also details an amazing alternate history where the North of England was the dominion of a magical overlord known as the Raven King, and pulls in many notable historical characters.

If you've never read it, now's the perfect time as it's a real winter reader - you'll easily get lost in the amazing world Susanna Clarke creates.

Rumoured as a film adaptation for years, the sheer scale of the novel and number of effects needed may be somewhat daunting, but Toby Haynes has a strong track record at succeeding with ambitious material, having been responsible for Doctor Who's The Pandorica Opens/Big Bang two-parter, and the Sherlock series two finale The Reichenbach Fall.

I agree, I'm glad the BBC are taking risks like this, I think The White Queen* was quite a risky commission as well. Haven't read the book yet, but have wanted to for a while. Looking forward to all three commissions announced today.

I do wish they'd take some risks with their smaller budget dramas though, they still seem to rely heavily on crime dramas.

*Currently reading the book, not my kind of thing, but still looking forward to the series and I think it could do really well for them if scheduled well.
