DigiGuide states the Friday show is the launch show at the moment. However, it should be noted that these schedules are not yet final and C5 frequently change the airdate for launch shows in the final schedules. Currently it states they are repeating a lengthy countdown programme on the Thursday, which could easily be swapped out and replaced by CBB in the final schedules should they wish once they've seen what the competition has planned.

The biggest danger on the Thursday would be DIY: SOS. Not very dangerous then, you might think. But no ! Time and time again this programme is revealed to have really good demos, so bizarrely it might be a little unwise to try and take it on. However, it's fair to say the other channels have nothing major lined up. ITV1 can only muster a documentary called Trouble Abroad, whilst The Restoration Man, which CBB has taken on before and beaten comfortably, is Channel 4's main offering, which will surely find life tough opposite Nick Knowles' show on the Beeb due to the obvious genre clash there.

My prediction: The launch show will switch to Thursday 3rd January at 9pm in the final schedules, with the first highlights show nestled between Ice Road Truckers and Celebrity Wedding Planner on the Friday.

I'd say the sort of ratings Big Brother and even Celebrity Big Brother now get on C5 that the competition doesn't matter too much - the days of 6-7m tuning in for the launch are long gone so it'll be the 2-3m who'll watch regardless that matter, and for them the competition is irrelevent.

Also of course by failing to adequately replace Big Brother C4 have nothing to compete against it, while BBC1, BBC2 and ITV1 wouldn't offer any obvious competition. Indeed I think nowadays the bigger threat is probably from Sky1, E4, BBC3 and ITV2. It'll be interest too to see whether 5* hold back American Idol until Celeb BB is finished.

I don't get why Channel 5 keep recommissioning Celebrity Wedding Planner, it's awful and it's wasting a good slot that could be used for something else. I think they should do what Channel 4 used to do and place a comedy there,

Shrek has gone downhill a lot since the second film in the series and doesn't deserve the big Xmas Day slot, but at least the far superior Up has a really nice slot on New Year's Day to make up for it. I hope it stays like that in the final schedules as it could do seriously big numbers should it stay where it is and it deserves to be seen by a big audience.

How to Train Your Dragon has a nice slot on Boxing Day too.

Does the fact that ITV are now screening Disney / Pixar films mean that C5 don't longer hold any rights ?

I don't know....
They still have a missed episode due to CIN which they haven't caught up on maybe that's the one missed or there's just a single episode on New Years Day

There wasn't last year either until a couple of episodes before xmas.....It's going to be fine

Jeff Ford spoke very favourably about its demos when he spoke about it at TV Festival, so presumably that has something to do with it. If it's keeping the right kind of viewer around, then even if it's not a big hit in Total People, I can see why they are continuing with it.

C5 has a nice schedule on Xmas Eve with three all new festive specials, good to see them making a bit of an effort there. Xmas Day is awful with Stobart repeats all evening, why they can't just stick a good film on that always rates like Da Vinci Code or Hancock I'll never know. And Most Shocking Celebrity Moments might find life tough this year opposite other festive treats like Ripper Street and Big Fat Quiz, hopefully that will change.

New Year's Day they've pulled something out of the bag with a themed evening. The World's Strongest Man final tops the bill at 8pm, which is sure to lend a useful lead-in to 50 Shocking Facts about Diet and Exercise at 9pm.

I suspect as Jonwo explained, as part of the deal for Tangled ITV also landed the rights to a few other titles.

It may just be that this is a short term deal for the holidays only, as AFAIK the relationship between C5 and Disney remains healthy and active. Dumbo was the most recent title to air as part of the deal on October 21, and it's quite normal for them to not show any at this time of year before resuming again sometime in the New Year.

Film rights seem to have gone really weird. ITV apparently have other Disney titles as part of the deal.

Obviously after losing the Bond catalogue & Sky securing exclusive rights to the Harry Potter collection over the holidays, ITV went looking elsewhere.

No sign of Polar Express on ITV this year, which has been a regular feature in the Christmas schedules for years. It's on Watch this year, which is presumably why ITV2 screened it a couple of weeks ago (presumably their last airing before rights expired).

Interesting. When are they showing those? It's difficult to remember who has what these days. They premiered on the BBC, then Channel 5 had them and now ITV. ITV had Pretty Woman and various other Touchstone films for an eternity then it turns up on BBC3! Who owns what? WHO OWNS WHAT!?!

ITV will get Harry Potter back as the Sky deal is only for a year but I wonder if they plan to air the final Harry Potter films together or seperately as it would be a major draw to air both maybe over a Bank Holiday or next Christmas.

Film rights are a bit weird at the moment, think Channel 4 seem to be the only one with some consistency with their deal with Fox and Paramount.

I doubt it - there's been a few deals lately where it seems certain franchises are sold seperately to a main deal - I guess kind of like the Premier League Disney (and rivals) have realised they can potentially make more money by separating their rights into packages rather than selling them as one.

Feels different this year. Don't know why. I just can't see it rising much but would love to be proved wrong.

A few years ago you'd read stories about who bought what from which studio. Now it's a surprise seeing films you thought were part of one deal popping up somewhere else.

The animated films alone are probably worth a lot of money even if they're over 20 years old like The Lion King. Bond has always been sold separately despite it changing studios and also Star Wars and Indiana Jones, I think Star Wars along with Harry Potter must be the few films that don't get repeated on ITV's digital channels.

Sky exclusivity on Harry Potter is for 3 months, Bond is a year I believe.

Yeah 15 minutes of news and no more for BBC1 in the early evening. I'd say.
