One of British tvs great characters. RIP.

Whatever else you might think, TXF is an extremely well made show and, for all ratings are down, it's still a big gig for ITV. However, if ratings fall next year, I think Cowell will call it a day.

Shocking, stunning ratings last night. Or not.

I guess it's "off message" today but X Factor was way above trend recently. Down 14.7% from the Saturday final last year. That's still a good bit more than they'd like of course but it's also the lowest year on year decline for any episode this series (discounting a bootcamp episode the weekend of the dodgy ratings). Recent trends suggested it would be as much as a million lower than that. It's also the first time that there has been a big uplift for the final performance show since they started splitting it across the weekend. Usually it just rates about the same as the week before.

The McFly show did badly but it's pretty clear ITV like these music specials because this is the fourth year they've done it and the third time they've rated terribly (the Cheryl Cole one in 2009 managed about 4.5m, JLS/Bieber/McFly all flopped), I'm guessing because they're always set up to promote something for the artist, the cost for ITV is minimal (labels and management paying the costs).


Sandwiched between the 2008 X Factor final and with a certain Ms Cole proving extremely popular, The Girls Aloud Party did over 7 or 8m, IIRC and ended up in the top 20 for the year.

No denying The Voice dropped when the live shows started, but it rallied at the end. And had it not been for the fact that they stupidly put an edition on before 7pm, the ratings average would have been a bit better.

Anyone remember a television series featuring Hear Say from 11 years ago?

Glenn A, in your opinion if XFactor gets 1m fewer viewers next year and averages something like 8.5million across the series instead of 9.5million, do you think they will continue with the show from 2014 and beyond or pull the plug?

The most recent Sky At Night went out on BBC4 last Thursday, repeated yesterday afternoon on BBC2 and shown again tomorrow night at Midnight on BBC1.

I expect the next SAN at the start of Janaury will be a special tribute to Sir Patrick. I don't think the BBC like to rush their tributes these days. Their tribute to Clive Dunn is premiered next Saturday night on BBC2, over a month after he died. Take your time and do it properly.

The X Factor is still one of the best made entertainment shows on TV production wise. Last year's final won a BAFTA for Best Direction. You can't fault the production values. Next year's ratings could decide negotiations for future series. It still gets big ad friendly demos but with lower ratings ITV can't charge as much.

McFly's show bombed for two reasons. 1) It was up against the Strictly juggernaut 2) Until I saw people tweeting about it, I had no idea it was even going to be on...perhaps a little more trailing could've pushed it into a respectable 2.5-3m zone. There was NO promotion at all and while they did mention it after 8:30pm Corrie (well 9:00pm just before the next show) on Friday that's just not enough.

there was a lot of nice comments regarding the show so if only ITV gave it some promotion and a better slot. At first it was due to air tonight at 7

Regarding Mcfly it seems the BBC now has the hump with them doing a show for the rival channel as they were due to perform on the LIVE final of Strictly but now that seems like it's not happening.

I'd say that's at the very optimistic end. It would require a year on year decline of 11.5% compared to last Sundays 25% fall. But Satuday nights rating certainly does open the door to some more optimistic predictions. Until a few hours ago I'd have said 10.5m would be the best they could hope for.

So while last night was better than expected, I'm not sure I'd change my prediction too dramatically based on one rating.

Mcfly don't have that sort of label/Management. Mcfly have a 50/50 deal which is where Music and Concert sales are split right down the middle.
Mcfly left Island records in 2007 and set up their own label after Island demanded they do a hits album after just 3 years.

It was ITV that came to Mcfly with the idea back in the summer as mcfly tweeted about being asked to a meeting for a TV channel

Sad news. Strange thing is I was thinking an hour ago before I heard the news that he looked like he was looking unwell! Very sad indeed.

I hope the Sky At Night carries on and they give him a wonderful tribute. A great character that will be sorely missed.

The Voice aired in early summer and TXF in early Winter. So really I wouldn't compare the ratings for both as we know daylight savings time does effect ratings.

Whether fans of the show like it or not, X Factor is declining and another revamp of the panel will just cause even more problems. How many revamps can they give this show... the fault lays within the production of it. Its basically one big farce now, scripted and the whole Chris thing has just highlighted what a parody the show has become.

As soon as ITV find another big hit they can use on Saturday nights, X Factor will be dust just like Blind Date and Stars In Their Eyes before it. Everything has a shelf life. X Factor has pimped every story now to death. There are only so many times you can repeat the same thing. The show looks and feels tired.

I think if it falls below 7 million, then Cowell might call it a day. Yet he might persuade Cheryl and Danii to come back and save the day. It's not that TXF is a bad show, only SCD has similar production values, just it's overkilled and treated as if it's high art by ITV.

BBC1 showed the first airing last week.

Do you know what this got on +1? Odd that it was down on last week, I know most shows get higher ratings for the first and last episodes but the first of this series was against IAC and repeated to over half the same audience size as it first aired to so I was at least expecting it to match it. Oh well, they're only overnights and as I said it repeats well.

I don't think anyone's comparing, although I am thoroughly amused by the excuses that have been made for the way it lost viewers, excuses which would never be afforded for The X Factor.

The only thing you need to compare is against its own performance, and it went from a peak of nearly 12 million to hitting lows of 5 million in the same series. And frankly, if that had been The X Factor we'd never hear the end of it from Samuel.

A strong finish for I'm A Celebrity but it would have done better on a Sunday.

strictly has so few hits on other channels against it at the time it goes on no channel seems to bother however when xfactor on it faces merlin pulling in almost 6 million , if more hits were shown strictly would be far less popular

I think there might have been conflict with the BBC not being seen to promote certain things commercially. That's why the winner of The Voice suffered. No promotion.

Plently of excuses are still being made by X Factor fans however. Mainly by bringing The Voice into the debate in the first place as a distraction to X Factor's own performance. A show that once peaked at over 18 million viewers I should add. The Voice really has nothing to do with how X Factor is performing so didn't need to be brought up.

Also what Samuel posts on here is not my concern. I speak for myself and X Factor is in terminal decline. The Voice is still in its early life. They can correct the problems for the next series, Its where that shows goes from now that matters. X Factor had plently of its own issues in the early years. The X Factor however appears to be harmed by all the constant revamps and changes. Changes it never really needed in the first place.
