Completely agree, orlie. It's a shame how things have worked out. The plot hasn't really done any characters any favours.

Me too.
They really were brilliant as friends. I saw loads of comments about that from total non-shippers - they were just gutted when that friendship went up in smoke for the sake of a soppy unbelievable "romance." And yep, I think that could have worked brilliantly - Ste and Doug build a life together as a way of flipping the bird to Brendan, and becoming their own men. Ste would have been a confident, independent guy who then has to make a grown-up decision whether to let Brendan back into his life. Brendan has to learn to respect him. Oh well.

That said, I was hopeful at first that the Stug romance would be a believable obstacle on the path to an eventual Stendan reunion. They had a moment or two that I thought were kind of cute but overall never really worked for me whereas their friendship was awesome.

Definately agree with this, it could have been a beautiful bromance and there would have been no need for the paranoia, or PJs tears. They were both helping each other be stronger better individuals as friends, as lovers Dougs sleeziness and manipulative side has been enhanced and Ste's become a liar
That said I'm still suprised by the hate for Doug - I dont think I've ever been in a fandom where the "other man/woman" is hated as much as people hate Doug! (Poor Doug

Yes, I'm not a 'Stendan' fan, and I can't stand him. It's not because he's with Ste, it's because I'm sick of his snivelling whiny face, his deviousness, and his self-righteousness.
I can't think of another romance where the other man/woman has been such a manipulative whiny spaff mitten though to be fair 
I think there was a lot of ambivalence about doug beforehand too, sure some people liked him but on the whole I think he was found a bit meh and I often wondered why they'd bothered ringing him back. I did have a brief period where I liked him, when he was acting like a proper lad, the stuff with lee etc. but in my opinion he has been totally tarnished as a character in a way I'm not sure he will be able to come back from for many people.

This is why in my head I like to pretend Doug is still straight...and that the "magic hug" is a pagan spell that will wear off one of these days

I guess Doug always had this sneaky side to him but its deffinately been enhanced to a level thats no longer appetising. I really want him to find someone to be happy and settled with, who can make him face his paranoias in an understanding way. He's done it to himself (mainly) but being with Ste has just helped to damage him.
If Brendan told Father Des about his deal with God, I hope Des would point out that 1. the NHS saved Ste and 2. if God had a hand in it, he did it because Ste deserved to be saved, not to keep Brendan away from him. If he'd died, Brendan would have been kept away from him anyway.

I think that might have even been the plan, orlie. Stug was just so rushed and unrealistic in the way it was told, not even considering the basic unbelievability of the pairing, that it just can't have been originally intended.
I think the friendship was going to be that plot-device for the deli, exactly as that played out, and then it could have carried over like you say with how much they shone as mates, the friendship cockblocking Stendan as Doug acted as counsel and verbalized Ste's insecurities and neediness issues to him when nobody else has before.
