Completely agree, orlie. It's a shame how things have worked out. The plot hasn't really done any characters any favours.
They really were brilliant as friends. I saw loads of comments about that from total non-shippers - they were just gutted when that friendship went up in smoke for the sake of a soppy unbelievable "romance." And yep, I think that could have worked brilliantly - Ste and Doug build a life together as a way of flipping the bird to Brendan, and becoming their own men. Ste would have been a confident, independent guy who then has to make a grown-up decision whether to let Brendan back into his life. Brendan has to learn to respect him. Oh well.
