EE - Time for some lesbian characters?
EE, in common with all the major British soaps has been a lot better over the past few years at featuring believable gay characters.
However, EE has a much better track record of showing gay male characters rather than Lesbian women. It's actually been a while that we have seen a permanent lesbian character in the EE cast (I think the last one was nurse Naomi Julien who had a brief affair with Sonia, and then was framed by Dr 'Mad' May). Before that I can only remember Binnie and Della from the 90s. (And yes, Phil's dodgy lawyer Ritchie is a lesbian, but she's hardly a permanent character). Now that Christian, Syed and Ben have all left, im sure EE will bring in some new homosexual characters sooner or later, but this time shouldnt we see some gay women? Anyone agree? And what characters/storylines would you like to see happen with these new characters? |

Yes, possibly but it still depends on the scriptwriters and the writing hasn't been at its best for a long time. Maybe the scriptwriters should improve their writing for the characters that are already there before they introduce new characters

this is the East End of London,
Yes they do need to replace Chryed and also have a lesbian couple or two single lesbian characters - if LN does not do this then she is ignoring the gay/lesbian audience... but in saying that its nearly a year since Yusef left and we have no GP still! |

I think a lesbian would be nice to see. We've had two attempts at lesbians, both pretty much ended in failure. Not saying they were bad characters, just really unsuccessful attempts.
Maybe a young adult experimenting with her sexuality and arrives at the square in which she settles as a lesbian. |

What's Natalie Cassidy doing these days? They could always bring back Sonia as a lesbian again (~ducks and runs~)

By that logic EE also needs a Rapist, a Pedophile, a Serial Murderer, a Heroin Addict and a Racist.
If they can write a really good storyline which naturally introduces new homosexual characters then fine but we cant just have the producers ticking boxes to keep everyone happy |

Its noticeable that ALL of the British soaps have at least 1 homosexual character on permanently now. EE should not be an exception. |

Its just not believeable any more. 1 person in 11 in the UK is gay. so it stands to reason that there should be at least 1 in a soap. Having no gay characters is about as accurate as having no black characters.

I don't agree that soaps should have gay characters "for the sake of having a gay character". I'm not saying that they shouldn't be represented at all either, just that tokenism (i.e. we need to have a gay character for the sake of it) is wrong.
I'm all for a new gay character, so long as they're well-written for and have decent storylines not always linked to their sexuality. Your right, tokenism is pointless... after all I think the reason Gus was kept in EE for so long was because they simply didnt have any other black characters apart from Patrick. Noticeably As soon as the Foxes arrived, Gus was axed. But I think EE should be thinking of introducing some well-written gay characters fairly soon... and id like them to be female. |

Personally, I think that they should do a coming out storyline but with an existing female character. Whitney would be a good character to do this with as they seem to have taken the limelight of her for a while which has been nice but it might be time to give her another storyline. I'm thinking that she could have always been attracted to females as well as males but never wanted to admit it or acknowledge it. At a party/clubbing, she gets drunk and kisses Lauren. She develops a crush on her and tries to accept and understand her sexuality and feelings for her best friend. It would be interesting to see how Lauren copes with Whitney's attraction to her. Just an idea.

I have often pondered a scene where Lauren and Lucy get frisky after a few drinks. Then suddenly in walks Poppy with a selection of toys
