toast done under the grill
i just done myself some toast under my gas grill, since I have not used it for a while, I thought I better make sure it still works ok.
i don't know if it was my imagination, but I think it tasted nicer than doing it in the toaster, or maybe it was just me remembering the old days when we used the grill all the time. |

Not your imagination, toast from Gas grill beats toasters and electric grills every time.

I like it better too, toaster is just more convenient because you don't have to keep an eye on it.

A toaster is fine for a quick slice but lets be honest, you can't make a Croque monsieur in a toaster can you.

You should try just grilling one side of the bread, it's gorgeous!

Thank goodness for that, i thought it was me. Yes, Neo, it is possible to do a ham and Cheese Toastie in a toaster, used to do them a lot in the café I used to work in many years ago. ok it was not your normal toaster, but it was still a toaster and you can do them now with toastie bags, not that I have tried.
The problem with doing it via a grill is it is slow and i expect cost more than a toaster, but I did enjoy those couple of slices of toast, so may use it more often. poor cooker, it must feel left out as it have not been used for months. |

You can do a croque in the oven. Toaster bags make croques easier to make in the toaster but not as nice as a sandwich toaster or the oven if you don't have a grill.

I absolutely love cheese on toast and you cannot do that in a toaster. In fact, now as I think of it, the only time I ever have my grill on is for cheese on toast.
I've got a toaster and a George Foreman Grill, so cheese on toast is my one and only grillular requirement. |

Toast under a gas grill reminds me of holiday as a child in a caravan and yeah tastes nicer. I don't have a toaster at the moment.

My poor George Foreman Grill is stuck in a cupboard and have been since I had my first halogen oven. i must take it out and dump it as it really is past it sell by date and I don't really have any where to put it. |

Like when I smell bacon, it reminds me of when we used to cook breakfast outside the tent and the smell of everyone else doing the same. i don't eat bacon myself, but the smell of it in the morning. A few years back when a friend of mine lived in a house with a open fire, when I stayed there for a break, we used to do toast over the open fire, now that was toast. Sadly those days are gone. |

It does taste nicer - especially under a gas grill.... which I've never had. I just remember one at my gran's.
Rayburn or Aga toast is nice as well. You make it on the hotplate using one of these: http://images.bettytwyford.com/image...4-54106700.jpg |

Delia says its better under the grill than in most toasters (cept top of the range ones like dualit) so its defiantly true
![]() Mmmmmm aga toast. I miss coming in from school and leaning agsinst it! So comforting. When we moved out of that house i took pictures of it as it was such a belived part of my growing up- less learnung to cook on it, more cosying uo against it. Much missed

Toast made in front of an open fire with a toasting fork beats them all. It dries out your eyeballs too but it's a small price to pay.

![]() I've used a toaster for years - but I still think toasting bread on an open coal fire is lovely. But I'm not intending to rip the central heating out, so it's a toaster all the way for me.

You can't make a Croque monsieur in a toaster as the cheese is on the outside.
The proper way is in a oven anyway. |

Many years ago my late Mum always made our toast like this - it took me years to realise people mostly toasted both sides of the bread!

If in a hurry I use the toaster, but I prefer grilled toast sometimes I butter one side before it goes under the grill, For garlic bread I use garlic from the tube mixed into butter then lightly toasted.
