Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger was the start of them getting much more success with singles with Payphone and One More Night and also decided their fate to become more pop than their previous efforts.

Angels - Robbie Williams.
Without it, he really would have been known as 'The Fat Dancer from Take That' IMO. |

Showing my age a bit here but Phil Collins single a cover version of
The Supremes You Cant Hurry Love put him on the road to super stardom in the mid eighties. You could hardly turn on a music TV show with him being on it This in turn gave Genesis a more commercial sound and although they were already a big band this put them right amongst the big boys in terms of album sales and ticket sales |

Just A Little - Liberty X
I think that was their first big hit and they were huge after that. IIRC their first two singles before that didn't really set the chart alight (but they were good) and then there was the lawsuit over the name and everything. |

Melanie C - Northern Star...before that single the album wasn't really doing much in the charts, it slipped out quietly after peaking at No.10. Northern Star definately kick started the album campaign into full swing....shame it didn't last long.
Also Abba - SOS....for a short while before they released this they were seen pretty much as a one hit wonder as the records that followed on from Waterloo didn't really catch on, then came SOS....you know the rest. |

I would say Call The Shots for Girls Aloud.
They were always pretty successful but this song gave them a huge credibility boost as they were also considered quite naff and cheesy up to this point. It was the song that "kick started" the next stage of their career. Tangled Up and Out Of Control were more mature efforts for them. |

Just Dance - Lady Gaga
Baby One More Time - Britney Spears Both of these songs made these artists famous (more so with Britney than Gaga) I consider Baby One More Time a pop classic. |

Madonna's Like A Virgin is probably one of the most elementary simultaneous kick-starters and savers. It was released at the tail end of the same year that started with her having a modestly sizeable introductory hit with Holiday, but subject to the law of of diminishing subsequently saw a #14 (seems so shocking now) for Lucky Star and a #56 with Borderline. But LAV truly changed her fortunes around, to the extent that she was not without at least one song in the Top 40 for almost literally the whole of the year of 1985, and that was truly an exceptional feat in that chart climate. Coupled with that of course Borderline got a relaunch in early 1986 and rocketed to #2, just before the stratospheric True Blue era heralded itself in.

'SOS' for ABBA I would say, which was a top 10 hit just before their 'sensational' run of top 5 hits from late 1975 - 1980.
Whilst they'd had a #1 with 'Waterloo' after Eurovision and Sweet Dreams scored a hit with the cover of 'Honey Honey,' follow up singles 'So Long' and 'I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do' didn't do a lot in the UK really. |

Carly Rae Jepsen - Call Me Maybe, before this her previous albums had flopped back but then this smashed in Canada and then Bieber tweeted about it and it became one of the biggest hits of the year.

'Spinning Around' certainly put Kylie's music career back on the big selling track.
