I've been looking at the subject for a Humax; opinion seems to be that drives like the
Seagate DB35 series are most appropriate for PVR use. The maximum size may be limited by the individual PVR, though the Humax seems capable of formatting to at least 500Gb.

“Maximum Capacity and Performance Optimized for DVR Storage
Digital Video Recorder (DVR) manufacturers have unique requirements for hard drive storage. The DB35 Series redefines value for high-capacity systems and delivers performance optimized for DVR storage and optimization. DynaPlay Technology from Seagate addresses many of the challenges of integrating HDDs into DVRs: power, video streaming performance, acoustics and reliability. And capacities of up to 750GB enable services such as video on demand, high-definition DVRs and home media storage servers.”
