Surely these two systems are based around the same technology so does anyone know of there being any plans for one to be built by one of the major manafacturers ?
FM is well on the way out, DAB is crystal clear, why not combine them ?

I can assure you that FM is certainly not 'on the way out', DAB takeup has been very slow & FM will be around for many more years yet! DAB does not work very well on personel sets on the move, infact it's often worse than FM. Putting a DAB reciever into a mobile sounds like a nice idea, but I bet it wouldn't work very well, poor sensitivity, crap battery life etc.

DAB certainly isn't crystal clear round here! FM will be around for many years yet. Also, Ofcom are lining up AM for the community licences, so that'll be around for ages as well.

Agree with everything said so far, DAB is a real waste of time.

And no, mobile phones are most certainly NOT based around the same technology as DAB. The frequency range is completely different; GSM is 900MHz - 1.8GHz and DAB is around 200MHz. GSM uses specific voice codecs, DAB uses MPEG-2.

There is a DAB small chipset available now though, so I guess it's possible a manufacturer might encorporate that into a handset once they think it might actually sell. The current chips used for VHF reception in mobiles are really tiny though. Size is a very important issue... so to speak.

I think as we move more towards the all in one devices, such as PDAs, mobile phones, mobile DVD, internet etc. all in one device that it's probably something worth having, but until then I am not so sure it's worth the extra investment or battery life?
