Had to pop to hosp and noticed that there were a large number or old shape TV's (CRTs) working, and no sign of any digi box. Aerial cord plugged direct into wall socket. One set was being used and was tuned to CBBC (a digital only channel). Another tv didnt have CH4 tuned in, or Five for that matter.

The pictures look analogue too - quite a bit of picture noise and flicker, and everything in letterbox format.

I think they are either on Oxford or a relay of mendip.

Anyone explain?

Most likely they are fed via internal modulators from set-top boxes at a central location, a simple, cheap and common method.

Yes, it's also been done that way for many years from satellite where terrestrial reception is too poor.

These old TV's will be around a while for people to watch VHS and play vintage gaming consoles.

Some (much) older consoles don't play nice with LCD TVs.

Even those over-the-bed entertainment systems in hospitals are fed from a bank of Sky receivers via RF.

Probably so - although you'd usually use professional modulators fed from the Sky boxes (which makes channel spacing a LOT easier).
