Exactly like AT but a bit less refined and a bit more earthy if you follow. I listen to their discussions but don't join is as i am still an ignoramous about the music. Actually I have a fondness for dancing AT to old jazz numbers - Louis Armstrong for example.

An AT thread would be great. As I don't know much about the music I could do with the education.

You sound like my kind of friend . Dinner and rollable carpets - heaven!! The club scene hasn't changed so much (except Kizomba arrived!) but the classics still get a full floor.

In trying to think of some I stumbled across something that might fit the SCD familiarity criteria and be suitable for salsa.

How about LA Pantera Rosada - was it LA 33? off to find a link

You are SO right. Down south we are a bit sniffy about LA style, cross-body and what we now call 'that ballroom style' which is obsessed with 'armography' Bluerghhhh! We have a hoard of Cubans in our midst and they have converted everyone!

I started with Colombian Cali and then went to Cuba and got hooked on Cuban. So it's obvious I prefer a really authentic sound rather than a brassy, quasi-LA flash sound.

Jeez - why do we make it so complicated? I suppose we just care

I too prefer the Cali and Cuban sound but having said that there are lots of other tracks I enjoy too and frankly once I hear the first 4 beats I will dance to pretty well anything with enjoyment.

I take the view that salsa is a street or as HW58 observes " a roll the carpet back after dinner" dance!!. So I can't be bothered too much with the whole "Oh this has to be danced on 2/in slot/Cuban" debate any more than I can about being told I should drink white wine with fish. Fair play to those that do mind but to me its about music and how it moves you. - If it moves me in a circle rather than a line then partner willing thats how I will go.

Yep. Same here. I can dance to anything if the beat hasn't been drowned out by brass or bad singing. The only thing that makes me leave a room is bachata - which bores me senseless. Kizomba - ditto.

I will dance AT all night to the right music.

I misunderstood this post on first reading and thought you were asking if Aguanile started as cumbis. Now I realise you were referring to El Pescador.

I think this is a Cuban rumba - I am no expert ( even though I appear to be posing as one) However I do know there are different types of Cuban Rumba. The tempo of this is slow which seems most like Yanbu I think they call it. However in my minds eye and because of the call and response I can easily envisage the 'Vacunao' being performed. I fear if I tried to describe this on here I would get banned for using rude words. Lets just say it wouldn't be suitable for tea time telly at Auntie Beebs.

Oh don't get me started on Kizomba - AT without the grammar and a poor vocabulary is what I call it!

But I am the reverse of you. I can salsa all night and its the music that moves me. I have been dead on my feet, foot sore and weary at 3am - shoes changed, coat on and ready to leave the dance hall. Then a wicked track comes on and with my "have to dance to this!" head on its coat off, shoes back on and back onto the floor leaving around 5am.

With AT I love the dance (not that good at it to be fair) but the music doesn't inspire me in the same way. But this could just be because I haven't had enough exposure to good music yet.

Hey never heard that before. Brilliant for SCD - and a real salsa bailable.

And here, Miss An, is one specially written for you:

Orquesta La 33 - Anny's Boogaloo

Found some typical roll the carpet and dance salsa

SALSA-LA PANTERA MAMBO.POR DIEGO Y MAYRA

That's the way to do it. [No lifts necessary].

[the neighbour complains at 4;53 but the dog sees him off]

Never heard of Kizomba (or even Semba until youtubing just now) but I quite like Bachata.which I only discovered via youtubing "Stand by me" earlier this year.

Bachata --- Stand By me

Kizomba performance

Since we have moved to Cabo Verde what would you dance (if anything) to

I might be breaking this rule here but I have thought of these two - as examples that fit the salsa vibe while being familiar to an SCD audience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMFSpL2dHwA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOSDU...eature=related

However Spin turn - not good examples of what makes a great salsa track - both are a bit thin. The MJ is particualrly tinny. Fragilidad is on the slow side but actually I like dancing to this with the right lead. It makes a nice change to do a slower lyrical salsa at times, I dance with a guy to this whose style and interpretation sends shivers down my spine.

I noted the question and will try to give my opinion of what makes a great salsa track. Its not an easy or quick one to answer but is to do with percussion and layering.

I didn't like the first one at all - You Rock My World (Berna Jam Salsa Remix) by "Michael Jackson"

Fragilidad is superb. Never heard it before. Wow. Not slow at all, Just right.

Though Sting's Spanish diction should have been sorted out before the recording. Just listen to his "English" (or Chilean) hard t's and d's and weak "g" in fragilidad.

Well it literally means "fur" and often to mean "lining" - and yes it sometimes inevitably morphs into PHwooor.

What were you wearing at the time you heard it? Perhaps not a Brazilian.

Found a CD of mine last night - broken - sad face. On line looking to see if I can replace it. I bought it at a gig or a salsa congress so not sure if I will find it on line.

This was the title track. Too much brass for your tastes Sofakat?

Tin Pop con Birdland - Los Van Van

Danced to this last night - possibly my dance of the night. So joyous and uplifting = all those yeses!. Although the SCD audience won't know this track i think it could capture the public imagination.

PS I should perhaps declare an interest - I am very partial to a drop of Van Van

Hey thanks for the link to Tim Pop Con Birdland. New to me. As it happens I am a Weather Report fan. Here's the original "Weather Report - Birdland" and you'll see the connection.

Ha! Got a CD of Los Van Van "Songo" sitting next to my k/b with a ticket inside the for Los Van Van at The Empire Ballroom on 16 April 1989. Finally getting round to ripping it.

So listening to "La Titimania" . It is about old blokes who love twenty year old women and are inflicted by the deadly disease "La Titimania". [Yes exactly as it sounds so fits in with the SCD Tottymania. By way of balance maybe LVV should write about Pashamania or Artemania?]

Here's the video of them playing

Welcome to the party - Har You Percussion band

Another one that would separate the sheep from the goats. I don't much care for this recording though. In the opening bars of my copy it is the double base that initially picks up the rhythm which I think sounds super cool.

Great. Thanks. Never heard it or of them before. Sounds like a 60's jam session - Hey I see it a '67 release

Found this dance to it. You'll love it thought he recording is poor

PK Swing - Dejan i Sanja - Salsa Show "Welcome to the party"

A dubbed version of the same dance

Oh and the carpet under my chair will need replacing soon at this rate of sitting down salsa.

Great party track.
