What we never know is how many other artists don't get it right first time and have to have their first attempts edited out.

At the TOTP show, only McFly had to do 2 takes, because a lead going into one of the guitars fell out.

I saw TOTP

I thought Steve started off nervously which is understandable but he did get into the song - he looked a bit confused at the end I thought but overall considering what he had been through he did really well.

I hope the media give him a break and give him a chance to prove himself.

Booing is unacceptable but unfortunately some people just don't think

According to sky news:
-----------------------------
Steve Brookstein had a sample taster of the infamous hostile crowd, when he was booed off stage... not once but THREE times at his first gig since winning X Factor. The soul-singer turned up to perform at The Radio 1 and Top Of The Pops Christmas Party, only to be greeted by a wall of booing and jeering.

It got so bad DJ Scott Mills had to cajole the 2,000-strong crowd at London's Shepherds Bush Empire to give him another chance, which they did... but only until he started singing. According to one guest, as soon as he started warbling, the booing struck up again, Steve forgot his words and had to apologise to the crowd: "He was extremely shaken and looked to be holding back tears. It made him look like a novice, especially alongside the likes of Kylie Minogue, who also sang." Just 24 hours after winning the X Factor vote, the 36-year-old crooner had to admit: "I don't think I appeal to a lot of younger people. There was a lot of noise and the booing just threw me. Hopefully I'll get through it." And it wasn't just the unwelcome crowd participation that Steve found hard to handle, but the backstage probing by journalists also riled him somewhat. After being asked whether his first album was going to be full of cover versions, he snapped back: "Actually, it is not going to be an album of covers. The album is going to be good." After a short while, his PR people stopped the interviewing - perhaps aware that Steve's 15 minutes of fame could well be ticking away.
----------------------------

I'm not sure how its possible to achieve 64% of 8 million votes, yet get booed off stage to this degree....strange!

A large number of people who vote on a Saturday night show don't actually ever buy a CD and certainly won't be representative of the audience at a TOTP Xmas party. That audience would be mainly teens and early twenties (I think) and Steve's target audience in the main would be older than that so I'm not surprised that the reaction was less than enthusiastic. I'm actually surprised that they put him on that show but I suppose its just part of the marketing machine cranking into action. Obviously he won't get that reaction at his own concerts but that crowd were after the likes of Mcfly.

I didn't want Steve to win but must say his vocal performance was much stronger than when he sang it on the final night. For the first minute or so I wasn't convinced he was actually singing live at all.

The camera clearly showed he had a good reception.

I read that the adverse reception was edited out and we were only shown the third attempt at performing the song.

Precisley, very strange indeed Watson Somethings afoot.

And that news story seems to have been embellished a tad, maybe by the embittered reporter. Steve has already explained his side , and I am more apt to believe his side, from his own mouth , then a news article embellishing it all. We will see how many minutes/years Steve has ( many methinks ) and watch them eat those words
