The quality of the iPlayer streams look so bad on a tablet it's tempting to download BBC HD content "elsewhere" to watch. But I don't think torrents or NZBs are legal.

I agree, quality is very good.
You can also download HD quality with iplayer app, crinkley hall at 630mb was excellent quality.

Yeah I watched that on the tube this morning, as did the guy next to me! Great show, and the quality was good.

I don't think that's HD quality. The iPlayer app currently offers 'higher quality' downloads but not HD.

It looks like even when using a computer, the only programmes available to download in HD are those from the BBC HD channel. They tend to be about 1.1GB for an hour long programme.

Actually yes, not true HD, they are Standard Quality encoded at 800kbps and High Quality at 1500kbps

It is rather odd I think. My Ipad has an absolutely excellent picture quality on videos, far better than on my HD smart TV. The OP must have some pretty good equipment if he thinks the Ipad screen quality is bad.

Anyone who has not got an Ipad, or any tablet, should be aware that they are basically toys. Very good toys, but that is what they are..
