Don't they usually retire the sing off from the semi final onwards?

The judges have no say, it's down to the public now and all that.

I remember they abandoned it to get Cher through to the final when it should have been Mary.

No doubt they will do the same this year for James.

If Chris is in the final 2, I can see them making that a sing off.

They better do....the public are absolutely mental this year. And it shouldn't have been Mary in the 2010 final, where is she now?....meanwhile Cher is selling records in America.

Because she is not very well liked over here, Americans are very gullible.

She's done miles and miles better compared to Mary here in the UK aswell...the point of the show is to find someone who can sell records...not about who has the best voice, these people are not auditioning week after week for a theatre production

I get your point, but to be fair Mary couldn't be expected to sell even moderate numbers without the right record contract, producers, writers and marketing. Cher only gets all this because Simon is hellbent on making the point that he can pick winners. He picked Susan Boyle and flogged her round half the world, he could have done at least a bit of that for Mary Byrne had he wanted to.

I agree but in the end it won't affect the result, not least because James is almost certainly so far behind he can't catch up and because the public can see through it all a mile off and don't like to be played.

As others have said, what IS the point of voting for the show's chosen ones as they will get recording contracts anyway. We all know James and Ella have contracts on the way, that's partly why they fell into the bottom. And Louis indicated tonight to Rylan that he will make it in TV, I bet he's been in for meetings already with TOWIE and other ITV producers.

As soon as Susan Boyle's audition hit Youtube...she took off by herself. That's a very rare occurance and is hard to replicate. There's no point, from a business point of view, to take someone who is exactly like another artist you have signed already.

So basically what you are saying is - scrap the public vote and let Cowell/the judges decide? Rather missing the point of the show surely - which involves people spending their money on voting and expecting how they vote in line with the stated rules to determine who wins/stays/goes each week.

Cher and One Direction have had millions spent on them in promotion etc - if Cowell wants to big you up and make you a star he can do and will do. They were just lucky - Cowell could have made any boyband in the US if he wanted to and he picked them. Mary Byrne by contrast probably had about 50p spent on her.

Whether or not particular acts have better careers post the show is irrelevant - you just need to treat the voting public with respect and not deceive them about the process.

Is it? If that is so, why is the winner decided by a public vote? We can vote for anyone we like for any reason we like. Whether they can sell records or not is totally irrelevant. I am going to vote for someone I like to hear sing. I am not going to vote for someone I don't like to hear sing regardless of whether the judges tell me they will be a worldwide recording artist.

Also, if it is to find someone who can sell records, why exactly do the judges put people like, let's think, Wagner through to the live shows?

Never said that....just that the judges vote and sing off is absolutely vital in keeping the show from descending into new lows with the likes of Christopher advancing over more talented acts...who have the potential to sell records or keeping the ones with the entertainment factor to provide variety to the show.

Cowell doesn't make stars...he spots them and invests in them.

Cowell totally made One Direction - they were created by the show, promoted and invested in big time. Being pretty boys helped - but he could have taken any boyband and made them with the right investment. Or maybe I have just seen too many boybands come and go - they are like buses!

As for your comments about Christopher I think you have made my point - you dislike the fact the public are voting him through every week and believe 'the judges' should intervene and override that vote and get rid of him via a sing off. Well - looks like it isn't going to happen so you may just have to accept the public vote.

PS I've heard North Korea is nice this time of year!

...taken any 5 boys really that had half decent voices and were reasonably good looking.

that is so spot on 1D could have been pretty much any 5 boys over the years stuck together with loads of bazinga put behind them, it's very sad the way Cowell goes about his business

Also to 'Liya' he isn't really a talent spotter just a 'who can I make marketable spotter' and in many cases he actually copycats existing acts to make his wonga, or at least attempts to.
