Official Formula 1 Thread (Part 8)
Quote:
Wow what a great race. Worthy of a title decider. In the end Vettel won, and there was no dirty tricks by the number 2 drivers from Ferrari and RB. Whilst I believe Alonso may have deserved the title (as he had an inferior car to the RB), I am glad Vettel won. I am not a big fan of Alonso, but do recognise that he is the best driver on the grid.
Vettel drove another excellent race, from last to 6th. He was lucky the accident with Senna didnt end his race. However he still had to drive a car with messed up aero. He kept calm didnt panic and brought the car home. After the way hamilton has been over the last month, I did kind of wish he won the race. He has been a totally different person over the last month. A much more likeable chap. Love the way Button was talking about how the strategy was brilliant and that what won him the race. However according to Ted Kravitz, the reason why Hamilton pitted first was that they couldnt get the tyres out in time for his pit stop. He was ahead of Hamilton, so closer to the pits. Which is why Hamilton came in first. Not sure how true this is though. As Button wasnt that far ahead of Hamilton. Other surprising thing during the race was Button overtaking Hamilton on a slippery surface. I thought Hamilton was a better driver in the rain and would be able to hold Button of easily. The overtake wasnt in a DRS zone either. Kimi trying to pop to the shops during the race Lucky for him it was wide enough for him to do a U-turn. It would have been a tad bit embarrassing if he couldnt.Martin Whitmarsh said in the sky build up, that Hamilton has gone on a years (or two) sabbatical, and he will be back. Not sure if it was wishful thinking, or Whitmarsh planting a seed in Hamiltons head. Either way I cant see Perez being to happy about that comment. In summary well done to Vettel and RB on winning two more championships this season. Well done to Alonso for dragging that Ferrari to 2nd place. Also well done to Kimi for finishing 3rd. Hopefully next season will be as exciting, but I doubt it. There are no drastic rule changes for next year. So you can bet the RB will be very strong from the start of the season. Whilst McLaren has the best car for the last two races (arguably), it will be interesting to see if the can stay ahead over the close season. |

I'm starting to wonder if the eventual outcome may be Hamilton returning to McLaren when it is Button's time to move on or retire, leaving McLaren with Hamilton and Perez. It seems to be the most likely outcome (I hope not for a good number of years yet, Button is still a great driver and shouldn't be thinking of moving on yet.)

I can soon see Lewis getting pee'd off with an under performing Mercedes next year so I wouldn't be surprised if he only stays a year and engineers a release. Though I think a berth at Red Bull could be just as likely in the future as a return to Mclaren.

If Vettel doesn't leave, I don't see Hamilton going to RB once Webber retires though, I think he'll only go where he doesn't have to be the teammate of either Vettel or Alonso. |

I think that's a definite possibility, though I too believe that if Vettel goes to Ferrari Hamilton will then go to Red Bull. I don't think it would be a chore for him to go back to McLaren though, he seems to have left on good enough terms.

I don't think it would bother Hamilton but I suspect it would bother Vettel and Alonso and it is quite possible Vettel was the obstacle to him joining RB.
As for Vettel, not sure he would be bothered. Why would he? Vettel doesnt enjoy number 1 status at RB, so if Hamilton came it would be no difference. If you are suggesting, that Hamilton would out perform him, I am not so sure about that. |

I don't think Christian Horner wants the hassle that Hamilton brings with him.

Well? The video footage showed the boards at the side of the track on yellow. There were no marshals at that section waving the slippery flags, so as far as anyone can tell, they were yellow flags.
It obviously wasn't just Sky who thought of it though, as the FOM feed itself replayed the incident! For the record, your 'idiots at Sky' remark, having watched both, and as much as I disliked the original deal, Sky have given far better coverage this year with a better presenting team, better commentary team, and better productions. Sorry to any BBC fanatics out there. The BBC just don't care about Sport any more, sad but true. The idiots at Sky remark is because of the fact they kept banging on about it, even though the stewards took no action for it at all. I can't agree with you on the presenting team though, I have noticed something this year though, people are unwilling to think that the Sky Sports production is anything other than the best, usually to justify the expense. Even as a massive F1 fan, the Sky Sports F1 programming bores the crap out of me, they just drag things out for too long and the constant interruptions, be it adverts or VTs, spoil the flow. The BBC do care, so your last comment isn't true. Sadly people just like to bash the BBC for dropping half of the live races, but they were forced into it, with the TV Licence being frozen and them being forced to fund other things as well, budgets have had to be cut. |

Did you not see the screenshot of the Official F1 iPad app which shows the status of each sector? It clearly showed that the part of the track the overtake took place in was not under yellow flag conditions.

Kept banging on about it? Not on the programme they didn't. They mentioned it slightly after the event and that the stewards were not investigating it, once in the paddock/sky pad, and once when Ted Kravitz spoke to a Ferrari representative who confirmed it was slippery flags. It's not like it was constant mentions throughout the programme.Quote:

I've not paid extra especially for F1 - I already subscribed to Sky Sports and Movies pack from Virgin Media, therefore I don't have to justify the cost, and I still maintain that having a dedicated channel and the staff that they have, Sky have a much better offering than the BBC, by far. The problem that the BBC has is that they have to keep lots of people happy, and if, such as happened last year, a race is red flagged in the middle, they have to shuffle everything around, delay programmes, move it onto other channels, and therefore are limited with the amount of coverage they can bring. I missed half of the 2011 Canadian GP last year (exceptional circumstances, I know), because the BBC shifted coverage from BBC1 to BBC2 and my recorder couldn't deal with that. If that were to happen on Sky, it would simply continue on the same channel.Without a shadow of a doubt, Martin Brundle is the best commentator for F1 at the moment, after the great Murray Walker (learned from the best). Alongside David Croft who is also pretty good, the commentary on Sky is second to none. Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill have more personality than David Coulthard in my opinion, and Eddie Jordan needs to stop... well... talking. Quote:

The BBC also had VT's when they had full coverage, remember...I'm not anti-BBC by any means. The 2010 and 2011 season coverage was absolutely fantastic, but they've been pipped this year by an outfit who specialise in Sport broadcasting, and it shows. |

It would bother Hamilton, if Alonso has his number 1 status written into his contract. I cant see Hamilton going to Ferrari if the team is geared around Alonso. Cant imagine hamilton being to happy if he heard the radio message "Hamilton slow down, you are catching Alonso".

The decent drivers spread over a few teams should mix things up nicely though...
Alonso and Massa at Ferrari Button and Perez at McLaren Vettel and Webber at Red Bull Hamilton and Rosberg at Mercedes Raikkonen and Grosjean at Lotus Even just the top drivers from those teams, Alonso, Button, Vettel, Hamilton and Raikkonen should make next season an absolutely fantastic watch

I liked the BBC race commentary team of Brundle and Coulthard. I wasnt to keen on Crofty on the sky commentary, he was way to loud at times for me. However he did manage to calm down over the season. However for the final race he sort of reverted back to being very loud. Although that was somewhat understandable. I liked Jake Humphrey as an anchor, he did a great job. Although the sky anchor Lazenby isnt bad either. Unfortunately Humphrey is leaving the BBC, so thats bad news for BBC viewers. This was the first year sky had F1, I expect it to get better and better. Daemon Hill and Eddie Jordan are both rubbish. Herbert is growing on me. The only thing I dont like about the sky coverage is a over the top bias towards the British drivers. Then again that is to be expected with it being a British channel. The Sky F1 channel was free for me. So I dont have to justify any expense. I already had a sports and HD subscription. Quote:

I like the BBC, they make a few mistakes, but I think for the £12 odd a month we pay in license, we get very good value. So I am not a BBC hater. |

Whilst there was nothing wrong with the overtake on Kobayashi, this one is certainly against the rules.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3tp3QDAkgo Vettel does in fact overtake a Toro Rosso (although the TR slows down to let him past) in a yellow zone. Under flashing yellows not just the static one. So this was an actually an overtake that was against the rules, unlike the one on Kobayashi. |

If it wasnt you can imagine the scenario, where Driver 1 is in the lead, Driver 2 (his team mate) slows right down to 50mph in a yellow zone. This would mean all other drivers behind would have to slow down to at least 50mph as well. This allows driver 1 to extend his lead. |

I doubt sky will ever have adverts during the race. If they dont have adverts during the movies or football, I cant see them having adverts during the race. Its a paid for service, so adverts are highly unlikely, not impossible though.

Sky didnt keep banging on about it. They commented on it during the race, twice. Once when it happened, and once when the replay was shown. Then after the race Ted asked Steven Fry about it, and then once Martin mentioned it to clear it all up.

The BBC were not forced to and they certainly dont care. They screwed over the british F1 fans. They still had another year left on their contract. Then it would have gone to a bidding process. BBC felt that they would have lost F1 to a rival FTA channel. Rather than have that, they ran to sky with a deal, a deal which meant they got some live races and a highlights package. So rather than keep F1 on a FTA channel, they rather it went behind a pay wall. If you want to blame anybody for F1 on sky, its the BBC and no one else.
So they could find some money to fund the extra things that are being forced to pay for without receiving any extra funding to do so. If they didn't care about F1 they would have just seen the contract they had out to the end and then dropped it completely, this would have been cheaper than the current deal is costing them in the long run. If they had no interest in F1 they wouldn't care if it went to a rival FTA broadcaster anyway, what difference would it make. I like the BBC, they make a few mistakes, but I think for the £12 odd a month we pay in license, we get very good value. So I am not a BBC hater.[/quote] |

You can see why broadcasters were confused about the use of light signals as even the FIA regs aren't clear about it.
Specifically, Article 4: 4.2.4 Other light signals Light panels may be used to form visual representations of the yellow with red stripes flag, Safety Car board or other signals, which must be stipulated in the Supplementary Regulations of the event. If the broadcasters/commentators do not have a copy of the supplementary regulations then how are they expected to know? It also means that it is dependant on the event! |
