Interesting regarding the possibility of replacing Vodafone with the Mexican outfit Telmex.
Perhaps that's why Perez is sitting in the car now rather than di Resta or anybody else? |

The big question for me is: how many helmets will Vettel get through this season? By the sounds of it he is on his second this season already...

My thought is that Mclaren would probably have chosen Perez without sponsorship. Di Resta simply didn't do enough last season to get a top drive, Hulkenberg probably didn't either. Besides, did they know the Vodafone deal was ending when they signed him?

I wonder if he'll manage to outdo the one he had for Singapore, with lights on it? FP1 wasn't startling for McLaren with 9th and 11th place. Massa seemed happy with his job. Interesting interview with Hamilton on Sky. I know the drivers are usually fairly guarded with their comments but Hamilton's off-hand remarks about how he's actually learning new things from the way the Merc' team operate suggests that perhaps McLaren isn't the "Ultimate F1 team" in all respects. *EDIT* Also, Murray Walker consorting with Sky?

Blimey, some conversation with Martin Whitmarsh during FP2!
Crofty asked if McLaren were up to something or if fans should be worried about thier form and MW just said "Certainly, yes, we've got issues with the setup at the moment and we need to solve them before we improve" and then went on to make worryingly similar noises to what Ferrari were making this time last year. ![]() Drivers seem to be suggesting that the option tyres barely last 1 lap at quali' pace which means pole position might be followed by a pitstop on lap 3, thus negating the advantage of getting into Q3 at all. |

I doubt Vodafone are pulling out without notice. It's probably at the end of their sponsorship contract so I wouldn't be surprised if McLaren were sniffing around for a replacement and it's equally likely that Perez's management would know that and make McLaren aware of any links between Perez and Telmex.
I heard his contract with Arai (?) allows him a new lid for each win. Beyond that, who knows? I wonder if he'll manage to outdo the one he had for Singapore, with lights on it? During FP1, Croft mentioned that he had a different helmet to the one he had for all the publicity shots on Thursday. Quote:

It's clear they're not going to be winners but Perez enjoyed a sneaky long stint in the Sauber last season a few times so I wouldn't be surprised if Mclaren try that and he might sneak into the top 6. I think Perez will out drive JB fore the first 2 or 3 races. |

Going to be a very interesting qualifying. Looks like anyone from Red Bull, Mercedes or Ferrari could get pole. Red Bull looked to be the only ones that were showing their true pace during the second session yesterday, Mercedes couldn't get a clean lap on the super-softs to show their pace and it appeared from the live timing that Ferrari were sandbagging. Alonso's and Massa's times in the final sector dropped off to a nonsensical degree, particularly given the last part of the lap is similar to the first two in terms of configuration and it was a trend seen over the long runs. I'm fully expecting to see more from them today.
Lotus I think will be very quick on Sunday but don't have the pace underneath them to challenge for pole, I can see Kimi and Grosjean around the third/fourth row somewhere. I can see at least one of the McLarens failing to make Q3, particularly given that Hulkenberg and the Force Indias had good pace yesterday. Q1 will be interesting with two of the established names now guaranteed to go out, I'm thinking Vergne and Bottas will be unlucky this weekend. My overall prediction for qualifying: 1) Vettel 2) Alonso 3) Hamilton |

Regardless of what other teams are doing, McLaren had their own 2012 car available for comparison and it's bonkers to suggest that they knew the 2013 car was actually worse than the 2012 car. Seems like they might have over-compensated for tyre wear issues in last years car and built a car that can't heat the tyres sufficiently, that they've underestimated the complexities of setting up the pullrod front and that, perhaps, they've gone a little too far toward accomodating Button's smooth driving style. Also, perhaps, I think they miscalculated how the tyres would be this year and that might have something to do with it. I think Perez is all at sea at the moment. Listening to him doing an interview this morning he was all stutters and stammers and mumbled excuses. I kinda got the impression that he'd rather have been back at Sauber. Course, it remains to be seen what happens in the race. Vettel said his car killed the options before the end of his flying lap. If he does that and gets pole we might find that a McLaren that's much kinder to tyres can forego at least one pitstop on Sunday. Mystic Si predicts Button and Perez will use options to get into Q3 and then use primes in Q3 so they can start the race on them. The question is, how many other teams will do the same thing too? They look worryingly off the pace though, and if the track has dried out, I think they could miss out. Hamilton is probably feeling incredibly smug right now... |

Is it wrong that I want him to miss out. Might add a bit more excitment.

![]() Did I mention I don't like the music? BTW, according to Andrew Benson on twitter, Vettel's problem was just a sensor. So tough luck all round
