Isn't the Italian Moto GP race at Mugello?

It is. WSB use Monza though and you get some tremendous drafting. OTOH Mugello along with Brno is possibly the best bike track in the World and I would hate the rumour of F1 moving there to be true as they would undoubtedly make changes and ruin it.

A fair point.

Looking at the FP sessions, rather than photographs, it looks like there IS still a substantial gravel area and they've, basically, just put a 10ft (?) wide ribbon of tarmac around the outside of the corner.

If that's the case, I guess it is more of a "help for clumsy drivers/riders" thing rather than a safety thing.
Ideally, for F1, it might've been better if that strip had been astroturf instead of tarmac but I guess that wouldn't have been any use to riders.

In other news, I see that Montezuma is rumoured to be off to run Alitalia.
I wonder if the reason they installed Mattiacci as Ferrari F1 team boss was to give him a bit more credibility if he takes over in charge of Ferrari?
I mean, putting an accountant in charge of Ferrari isn't quite the image Ferrari need but now, after his time in F1, he probably seems more suitable for the job.

If that is the case, it's probably a bit of a downer for Alonso cos it means he has, effectively, wasted a year at Ferrari when there's nobody steering the ship just so the new boss can get himself some boardroom street-cred'.
Still, I guess that sort of thing IS the price you might have to pay when you join a team where there's as much politics as there is at Ferrari.

*EDIT*

Incidentally, the latest rumour is that Bernie and Ferrari might be up to something to get the Italian F1 race moved to Mugello.
Apparently Ferrari are threatening to pull out of F1 if the Italian GP is off the calender but they are okay with the idea of the race being moved to Mugello because Ferrari own the circuit.

Wow!

Lotus out in Q1, barely ahead of the Caterhams and Marussias. What on Earth is happening to them?

Oh, incidentally, I don't think anybody mentioned that Caterham has finally got rid of that awful wedge-nose for Spa and replaced it with a knock-off of the FI/McLaren/Sauber nose.
least the car looks reasonable now.

Really pleased for Lewis getting pole. It's been absolutely ages since he's in that position.

Woot!

Great pole from Lewis. No dramas at all.

Wonder if the Italian fans will manage to refrain from acting like ignorant, racist, arseholes if he takes the win tomorrow?

I'm sure they'll forgive him if somehow Fernando can drag that dog to a podium place...

Weren't they cheering him on? There seemed to be mass of fans trying to get an autograph from Lewis yesterday.

But what a cracking lap. I suspect Ham is running a bit more DF than Nico, meaning he can hammer S2 and S3.

What like spa or Vettel at silverstone.

Anyway best not to feed the trolls isn't it.

I wonder what will happen at the start there could be a fair chance of Nicco and hamilton being to polite to each other at the chicane and both ending up in trouble.

It would be quite ironic if their new understanding lead to both mercs out the GP. And it would make the race a lot better as a clean start is going to line it up for a turn it off after lsp 5 borefest.

BTW is anybody with sky sports F1 HD thinking of watching the BBC coverage instead.

I watched P1 and P2 on sky then watched some of P2 again and P3 on the BBC. I found the Bbc coverage much better than sky. BBC comments were more interesting intelegent and relevant to what was happening on track. But I am a bit worried DC might blow the race.

David Croft is becoming the turd in the sky swimming pool. Not that the rest of the water is clear. Brundle is only reasonable now the whole sky team is dumbed down and fixate on pushing boring points about track limits or team radio advice which has existed for years wiyh out it being a point of tedium. And how is Davidsons experiences in endurance racing important to an F1 presentation?

No surprise really but Williams have confirmed there will be no change to their driver line-up.

How to promote safe diving on BBC1:
Drive down public roads whilst having a full debate on a walki-talki and only one hand on the wheel!

I would not have propped myself up between two cars on that steep banking in case the top one slid sideways into the bottom one. Unless they had secured them with ratchet straps?

Wonder if Hamilton can look forward to a sedate first couple of laps after the palava in Spa?

OOPS Hamilton stuffed up the start

WTF is Hamilton doing?!

Why bother doing all that qualifying if drop down to 4th as soon as the races starts?

If Nico can't stuff Hamilton, his team will!

He is never given the chance to race.

Now Hamilton has to chase Nico who has an unfair lead due to his detour.

Fair play to Massa for the way he acted there.

I suppose he realises that he needs as many points as possible, as does Lewis.

This time Nico's detour didn't work for him

Another mistake by Rosberg, Hamilton takes the lead

I wonder if Hamilton is drawing a wage for being his own team-strategist as well as being a driver?
Seems like he's often got a better idea of what needs doing than the team has.

"Yeah, Lewis, just sit behind him until the end and hope for the best"
"Nah, I think I'll actually race for the lead instead"

The idea of a single team-strategist for both cars seems a bit dubious to me.
After all, if the Merc's are running 1-2, what's the motivation to come up with a strategy that'll allow one driver to overtake the other?

I think the team is running scared: If they say words to the effect of "Yea, go get the MF!" and it all ends in a big crash, then that isn't good for the team at all. So they cop out and officially say "Oh you are doing really well!. Nice day for a picnic." and leave it to Hamilton to do his own thing.

Weak management!
