Fingers (and everything) crossed that he will be alright

The fan video of the crash has just popped up on my Facebook wall. I wish it hadn't.

It's a hell of a smash, completely lifts the recovery truck off the ground. Very scary stuff.

Stay strong Jules.

Video is on Daily Mail site now. As someone else said its Incredible that none of the marshals were injured. Its horrifying. That JCB must be incredibly heavy so absolutely shocking to see it lift that way.

In a way it was lucky that it hit the back the way it did and carried on. Had it hit it full on bringing all the energy to an instant stop, there wouldn't have been any hope of survival.

going by the video: https://vine.co/v/OK69Em0unD9

if the truck was not there the angle he came in would have meant he would have went through the gap in the wall and hit the concrete wall on the other side, which would probably have been worse, so in a way the truck helped in a small way by being there.

Going by the speed he hit it looks like he was speeding, as double yellow means slow and be prepared to stop, and he certainly was not going slow in that.

I agree with this.

For too long Double waved yellows have been ignored largely.

Remember Hakkinen waving without slowing. How many cars are actually ready to stop.

agree, they still speed even though yellows are show and no one says anything about that and even when red is shown that should mean stop immediately but they still carry on at speed. unknown to them there could be a major crash in middle of track around a corner, so as soon as a red comes out they should stop on the track where they are and not continue.

Tell you what, there are some arseholes on Youtube.

I'm subscribed to a number of F1 and motorsport related channels on YT and, as a result, it often flags up related things as "recommended" and today it's been picking out a heap of video's which show "Bianchi's Suzuka crash".

I clicked on one of them and it turned out to be a 30 second clip from the F1 2014 video game which shows a Marussia ploughing into a barrier.

Seems like anybody who'd go to the effort of making a video like that must be an F1 fan, to some extent, and yet they're obviously also a person who'd do something as distasteful as make a video like that with, presumably, the hope of earning some cash due to a large number of hits.

Like I said; arseholes.

Well I wouldn't like to call which would be best if he hits the wall at least the nose of the car protects him and less chance of incursion in to the drivers area. It think it's clear though what ever stop him in the end he was going to be having a bad crash.

I was surprised to see the truck lifting and by the extent to which it lifted. The engine of the truck is hanging out the back to act as a counter weight. This design makes the overall truck lighter than having a front engine and seperate rear counter weight.

I think the weight of the Sauber on the front contributes to the truck lifting as the Saubers weight is levered against the engine at the rear of the truck. The canter lever effect of the Sauber on the front and the rear impact add together tipping the truck forward and lifting it.

The movement of the truck must absorb some of the impact energy and the tipping forward I think means that the impact suffered by the Marrusia may have been worse if Sauber was not on the front of the truck. By lifting from the rear it actually creats a space for Bianchi to escape out the other side.

Not a nice thing to see.

Can't agree more. I've seen websites today headlining articles as 10 most severe F1 crashes.

Sadly some people are attracted to the thing we hate most about our sport.

I've been watching some of the videos. Those JCB's must weigh a lot and he knocked it up in the air at the speed he hit it.

However, why was the guy in the tower next to the crash still waving a green flag when Sutil had already crashed there?

Because it looks like the green flags were being waved past the site of the accident. According to reports yellow flags were waved up to the accident site itself.
What truly amazed me was how far that JCB moved and it appeared the rear wheel of the JCB was even bent out of position that took one hell of an impact to do that. I wonder if Bianchi's throttle had stuck open.

Very bad news today that Jules is suffering from a diffuse axonal injury

MEDIA INFORMATION │ 7 October 2014
A Statement from the family of Jules Bianchi
Yokkaichi, Japan
7 October 2014, 23.00hrs local/15.00hrs BST
The following statement is provided by the family of Jules Bianchi, in conjunction with the Mie General Medical Center, and is distributed on their behalf by the Marussia F1 Team.

“This is a very difficult time for our family, but the messages of support and affection for Jules from all over the world have been a source of great comfort to us. We would like to express our sincere appreciation.

Jules remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi. He has suffered a diffuse axonal injury and is in a critical but stable condition. The medical professionals at the hospital are providing the very best treatment and care and we are grateful for everything they have done for Jules since his accident.

We are also grateful for the presence of Professor Gerard Saillant, President of the FIA Medical Commission, and Professor Alessandro Frati, Neurosurgeon of the University of Rome La Sapienza, who has travelled to Japan at the request of Scuderia Ferrari. They arrived at the hospital today and met with the medical personnel responsible for Jules’ treatment, in order to be fully informed of his clinical status so that they are able to advise the family. Professors Saillant and Frati acknowledge the excellent care being provided by the Mie General Medical Center and would like to thank their Japanese colleagues.

The hospital will continue to monitor and treat Jules and further medical updates will be provided when appropriate.”

Lets hope he can pull through but I understand the injury suffered doesn't make that seem likely sadly.

Just read up on that and I didn't like it. This is a good time to avoid speculating and wait for more facts when we get updates, which may take a long time to come.

I've never noticed cars carrying on "at speed" after the red flags are shown. They invariably slow, probably to a speed at which they can stop inside the distance that they can see to be clear. I can't agree with your suggestion that they should stop on track immediately.

One of the worst type of brain injury, affecting the whole brain instead of just a part. This is very bad news indeed..Though watching that vicious impact of the crash I am surprised he was not killed instantly.

Yes I have read that thanks and in light of that information I feel we must not speculate further based upon it.

Calls for enclosed cockpits again, I can't ever see this happening myself, not only will it effect aero but who wants to be trapped inside if something goes wrong like a fire or if their unconscious, every second counts, they already waste enough time releasing hans.
Extra cockpit heat produced in humid and dry races, tearoffs rendered useless etc

All this because of an accident that would of never happened had the recovery vehicle been a crane on the barricade side, it's bad enough having marshals run off side to recover, this type of accident was bound to happen sooner or later, the fact that it hasn't is pure luck, even more so in the rain with aquaplaning cars.

I wonder how long Marussia will take to provide a preliminary report on the incident?

I mean, Sochi is this weekend and surely Marussia won't be allowed to race (and, of course, Malfoy might not be very happy sitting in the car, himself) unless they can confirm that it wasn't a fault with the car that was responsible for Bianchi's crash?

As has been pointed out elsewhere enclosed cockpits of the type F1 would use have been on LMP1 cars successfully for many years now. Of course they make the cars look very much like LMP1 cars ...

Why would they not allow marussia to race? The car aquoplaned off like sutil and drivers in years gone by that part of the circuit is bad hot spot in the wet

I think the safety car being out when removal machinery is on track is a good thing.
