From memory I think they where discussing making them 18 inch, along with a tyre blanket ban.
Thought of the day: will we see another driver in the future make it to 40 before retirement? Button or Kimi no, Alonso slight chance?

Not sure how easy this would be to implement but the first thing that came to my mind was a system similar to the pit limiter where when the safety car is deployed you have to press a button which will reduce your speed to an agreed level?

They already drive to a delta time when the SC is deployed which of course can be adjusted which will help.

The main problem however is (as in Suzuka) when the safety car isn't deployed and marshals/recovery vehicles are in the 'firing line' drivers still go too fast in the immediate vicinity. Especially in the wet as when one car aquaplanes it's very possible another car will do so in the same place.

A slow zone/code 60 style limit is one way you can get them to respect yellow flags or maybe a strict delta time for a certain sector. It could also reduce the need for over long safety car periods (cars unlapping themselves etc.) if it was applied for part of the lap as you can keep the race going elsewhere obviously F1 tracks are not as long as Le Mans but it's still possible I think.

I'd say that the limit should be automatic but with a driver's "safety concern" override. Then any driver who presses the override may be required to justify pressing it.

Fairly straightforward quali' session there.

First time in the year where Merc' really required luck to end up on top though.
Bottas lost 0.7s in the last sector and ended up around 0.6s behind Lewis.

Course, it could be argued that Merc had a handle on the balance between track evolution and tyre wear while Williams were pushing the envelope.

Yeah he was very unlucky, I was sure he was gonna pull it off
hopefully he can hold on during the race and split them or first.

Except in this case the available evidence so far suggests loss of control was not caused by aquaplaning.

Indeed.

Given how close it was between DR and JEV last year, and how well DR has done compared to Vettel this year, it seems like they could have saved a few bob there.

Course, maybe Vettel is some kind of superhero at car set-up and development and that's what makes him worth £40m per year.

Think the 18's are for later when Michelin join the party. The blanket ban has been put on hold.

I vaguely remember Pirreli wanting to make wider rear tyres for this year, but teams balked at the idea because it would change the aero and the cars had already been designed. So maybe thats it.

I think it was Merc asking for wider rear tires, but the non-Merc engined teams didn't like the idea. Apparently, it was clear the Merc was a better PU at that point and the other teams didn't like the idea of adding to a possible power advantage.

I think Rosberg can consider himself fortunate that he made that mistake with a nice wide track and what seems to be a very robust tire for the track. It could have so easily been game over for him for the title if one of those things were different.
