Yes, but with Caterham and Marrusia not even turning up and Vettel not running will leave only one person to get eliminated.
Without Caterham and Marussia, there are 18 cars on the grid. |

If Vettel does not participate in Q1, he will be one of the four cars to get knocked out.

He runs the risk of not being allowed to race. I hope race direction call Red Bull's bluff.

And 16 go through to Q2
Its quite simple. You start with 18 cars, 4 eliminated in Q1, 4 eliminated in Q2, leaving 10 cars for Q3. |

The stewards have announced that qualifying has been tweaked to 2x4 eliminations, so it's 14 this weekend. The rules didn't have a contingency plan for an 18 car grid so they've used their discretion.

I would have thought, RBR would ask Charlie, what would happen if they did miss quali. If he said he will be banned from the race. I can see Vettel going out for one lap and coming back into the pits. Ban avoided.

Even if he qualifies at the back of the grid I thought the rule now was that place drops get carried forward to the next race and so on until all they have all been applied?

Ok, here we go, rough plans for 3rd car next year, according to Tobias Gruner.
If grid drops to 18 cars for 2015, teams first in line to run 3rd car will be RBR, Ferrari & McLaren. If any pass on 3rd car, Merc & Williams are next in line. Bernie will cover additional costs, but not clear for how long. 3rd driver not eligible for constructors points. Must be guest driver or rookie without F1 experience, and allowed to run different car livery. RBR say they are ready to run a third car. |

Maybe there will be a split into two 'divisions' - F1a and F1b. The latter would have strict spending limits.
Each F1 weekend would have both races and there would be a lot in common so drivers and tech personnel's carreers would allow moving between teams and divisions. |

Bernie Ecclestone is right. This engine is expensive and doesn't suit F1 or anyone. At last he's speaking the truth. All teams are angry about the increased costs and it only suits the team threatening to throw their toys out the pram, those that demanded it.
And what has it created? An uninteresting season of dominance and fake rivalry to try and manipulate an exciting finish! Having run for long periods in safety/economy mode is ridiculous and must be changed. |

Having run for long periods in safety/economy mode is ridiculous and must be changed. And, let's face it, if they were still using V10s or V8s or V6s which, apparently, cost peanuts, all that'd happen would be that the teams with sufficient budgets would simply spend the remainder on other clever bits, which the smaller teams couldn't afford, and you'd have exactly the same situation. Bear in mind that Caterham and Marussia were always garbage regardless of the engine they were using and yet Williams were also garbage for years and yet, somehow, even with the allegedly enormous expense and complexity of this year's engines, they're somehow not garbage this year. That would suggest the real problem is more related to either an inability or a lack of commitment to build a winning car rather than expense preventing a team from improving. The only way to ensure parity would be with a proper budget cap and, firstly, good luck enforcing that and, secondly, you still need to ensure F1 cars are faster than any other class. In other news, I see Danny Ric' has gone all 70's porn-star.

Take the engine out of Williams and see where they are. You're right that F1 needs to be the at the pinnacle, but with the continued nonsense being allowed, it will soon be caught by other formulas. That's why the drivers are so flat in the main, the teams know the game playing generation suit the button pressing better and are cheap as well.

TBH, I don't think there's really any guaranteed recipe for an interesting F1 season. Sometimes they leave things alone and you get an interesting season and sometimes one team runs away with it, sometimes they mix things up and it becomes interesting and sometimes it isn't. Maybe, if they were still using the normal V6s, Caterham and Marussia could have stretched their budgets a bit further and lasted to the end of the season or maybe even managed to trundle around at the back for another year but I doubt the engine situation has had anything to do with preventing them from being successful. Seems, to me, that Bernie is just looking for an excuse for why they failed and the engines are a convenient scapegoat. Personally, I reckon we have to give it a least 2 years to see where things really stand. Next year I suspect that, if all the engine suppliers are really committed to the sport, we'll have parity of engines and then it'll be back to being a case of teams having to build the best possible car if they want to win. |

Not exactly an "edge of the seat" quali' session.
Not sure why but I can't help thinking that Hamilton's decided that he's going to settle for "solid" quali' results instead of pushing and pushing until he screws up. I guess he's realised that as long as he's on the same bit of track as Rosberg he probably is going to end up ahead so he doesn't need to go for broke in quali. Course, OTOH, it might just be that Rosberg is happier in Austin and he's just going to go away by 0.3s per lap. |

Surprise, surprise. Lewis Hamilton overtakes Rosberg for the lead...by using DRS. This device is worthy of Dick Dastardly being made chairman of F1.

Strange sort of race. Kind of exciting but also not very exciting at the same time.
Pundits making a big deal of the fact that the maximum gap Lewis can have after Brazil is 49 points but we should also bear in mind that Lewis can afford to finish 2nd to Rosberg in both remaining races and still win the WDC. He doesn't need to beat Rosberg again. All he needs to do is follow Rosberg home in each race. Bit unfair the way Grosjean passed Button at the end, while they were both being blue-flagged to let Hamilton past. Lot of drivers running wide around the circuit without any penalty. Smart strategy by DR to pass Bottas and then good driving to pass Massa. Vettel really doesn't seem to "add" much to a car, in the same way that, say, Alonso or Hamilton does. |

Well done to Lewis. Rosberg does himself no favours, moaning and complaining, and always looking for someone or something else to blame.
Despite this, was glad he didn't get booed, although neither did he get huge applause. Apart from the front two once Hamilton had completed his move, the race was quite interesting. Felt sorry for Button, but loved his 'are you sure' query when they called him in to pit for the second time

So if Hamilton wins this one, and Mercedes inevitably remain dominant for the next 4-5 years, do you think Hamilton will get close to Schumacher's record still, possibly even surpass him and become the GOAT?
Obviously's a long way off, but the potential is there for all to see. |
