Ha ha, your partisanship knows no bounds, does it. Swap Vettel for Hamilton and you'd have been complaining about this being the most boring race in history! By the yard-stick you and a lot of others in this thread seem to use, it was dull as dishwater. The lead, in fact the top 4/5 position was never in doubt. Bar Hamilton's issues we hardly saw anything of the top places.

Truth is there was a lot of entertaining racing across the rest of the field and personally the 2 hours flew by.

Normal service will be resumed in Suzuka. Mercedes had trouble setting the car up and getting the tyres to work for them. Basically a re-run of Malaysia. I don't believe Mercedes when they say LH had the pace to potentially win but I do think he would have got past Kimi into 3rd. The conditions and track normalised the engines allowing the chassis to shine. It's no secret that Ferrari & Red Bull have the best chassis. I don't think there's another track in the remainder of the season that will have the same conditions so Mercedes won't be too concerned. They will be worried about Vettel catching Rosberg in the DC, though.

According to the Telegraph Jenson Button is set to make a shock announcement that he will retire before this weekends Japanese Grand Prix because he is unhappy racing in a non competitive McLaren car.

I would be very, very surprised. Not that he might retire, but that he'd announce it ahead of the Japanese GP. It's Honda's home race and despite the terrible season they've had I cannot imagine JB would go out of his way to embarrass Honda like that. He has a very long association with Honda and Japan. He effectively owes his championship to Honda. I'll be disappointed if JB does retire this year, especially if it's to go and co-host TG with Chris Evans next year.

In the post race interview, Sainz said that the team thought he had a better chance of getting by, but had it not worked out, he would have given the position back to Max...didn't hear that on the radio though, just Max being told to let Sainz pass.

if button retires, he gets to spend more time with his fragrant wife - which according to press reports he hardly does.

I think Button does sound like he is going to retire. In interviews he was talking about in my career etc as if he was summarising.

Also he always give back chat on team radio. It's good natured but it is still back chat. It kind of sounds like he doesn't care anymore.

There is even an Alonso to Red Bull rumour. More far fetched but what would it say for Mclaren if both their drivers left. Terrible engine and pay drivers also, would be bad to think of them falling so far.

So you agree it was a better race then. I described it as better and not great as what could have been a great battle between Seb and Ricciardo was blunted by the safety car. I think I said that already.

Theres 18 billion reasons why that might not happen, if it does, im sure they will remain a b-team.

Would anybody buying red bull want both teams though thats the thing.

What if VW needs the money to pay the US (and elsewhere) the huge fines expected as a result of fume-gate?

EJ was just regurgitating old rumors over the weekend, as usual. VAG are no closer to buying a team than they have ever been. They're not exactly going to buy a team then run it with a customer engine. If they intend to enter F1 they will develop their power unit first then either enter as a new team or buy an existing team. Either way that's a minimum of 3 years away and given the prospect of crippling fines VAG aren't going to start investing big money in F1 until that's all sorted. The current concord agreement which Red Bull signed up to runs to 2020 so I would guess any change is likely to wait until then.

Everyone seems to be lined up to join Haas. Seeing as they're effectively a junior Ferrari team it seems logical that they act like TR do for RBR and take Ferrari's junior drivers, of which there are many. Frankly I don't believe a word coming from the BBC in relation to F1 these days.

No I don't agree it was a 'better' race as I've not had any particular issue with the racing this season. The point I was making was that had the car in the lead been silver rather than red you would have been moaning about it being a boring race.

Unless the Red Bull/VW deal has already gone through, it could have just gone tits. Winterkorn's gone.

Crazy thing for VW to be doing this sensor switch scam. Not sure what will happen with the fine I suspect they won't pay that much in the end. Hanging the CEO will be part of a response to mitigate the fine.

A change at the top is likely to effect things. There might have been nothing in it anyway. If VW do get hit hard over this though they may decide to enter F1 to rebuild their reputation.

When BP got hit with $6b fine, Obama gave them a $6b tax break. Sure they will be fine..

Can't find anything untoward reported, what's the rumor? I think there's an expectation that Lotus will enter administration as part of the buy-out process by Renault/Prost but it shouldn't effect their racing operation. No idea why. Probably something to do with the HMRC action against them that finally goes in front of a judge on Monday.

Hello everybody.

I've been browsing these forums for a couple of hours and just stumbled on this thread.
I hope you've all got a pot of coffee ready for the sessions at Suzuka.

Does anybody else think that Jenson is sounding more and more like a man who is no longer concerned about upsetting his bosses with race comm's that are rather lacking in tact and diplomacy?

Given his affinity with Japan, I wouldn't be surprised if there's an announcement this weekend.

Hey Aslan52

Im hoping Button is negotsiating a new deal with Mclaren and not going rally cross with a slot on Chris Evans new ego driven BBC Top Gear. He should go to sky and avoid the fish out of water show employing vacious tall models as fellow presenters.

I think button wants to live in Japan so he's waited untill this weeken to quit so he gets a free flight over there.

Practice has been a wash out so far and so nothing to go on if there is any chance of F1 being competitive again. Twice in a season would be a lot to hope for.
