This engine business is far more interesting than the on-track stuff. Ferrari refuse to supply Red Bull with 2016 engines and might be persuaded to give one team with a 2015 engine! So Red Bull have a simple choice, walk away totally or take whats on offer which is an old Ferrari for TR and the second best Renault for Red Bull (assuming the contract is still valid).

My personal favourite outcome is the idea of Red Bull selling out to Horner who would then take the Ferrari engine that's on offer. All good fun.

I wonder if this was the paddock's intention, back Red Bull into a corner where their options are retain the Renault (massive U-Turn) or leave? I doubt Mercedes or Ferrari would shed tears if they left.”

I think Red Bull have done it to their self really. Arrogance on their part thinking once they were out of other options somebody would have to rescue them.

It's a bit strange as they have been one of the most self interested teams so I wonder why they didn't see this coming.

Is there chance that Lotus could survive and Renault buy one of the two red bull teams.

Thinking about it a bit more, and with regard to what you've previously said, perhaps it's more a case of games-playing?

I'd be surprised if Ecclestone couldn't persuade at least one engine supplier to work with red Bull if push comes to shove.

The REAL advantage in all this messing around is that it means Red Bull can't progress the design of next year's car until their engine supply is finalised.
Mercedes or Ferrari ould quite easily wait until the last possible moment to say "Oh, go on then. You can use our engines" safe in the knowledge that the delay, by itself, will probably be enough to ensure that next year's Red Bull is a bit of a mess.

That wasn't intended as a serious suggestion. I was merely poking fun at the way the Red Bulls are plastered with Infiniti stickers despite them having no real involvement in the car, the engine or the sport.

Still, perhaps they could borrow the engine out of this in a pinch?

Oh dear. Nasty crash for Sainz although now Ted Kravitz is reporting its not as bad as it could be. Hope he's OK and its just how the barriers ended up ontop of the car that's causing a delay in getting him out.

Phew, looks like he's essentially uninjured. Big crash, though. Qualy is going to be interesting with so little running all weekend.

Appears Sainz went under the tecpro barriers and impacted on the steel armco head on. A few questions will be asked about that.

Absolutely ridiculous length of time to get Sainz out of the car there.

Looking at the replay, the front wheel broke away from it's mounts and was forced up onto the nose of the car and then Sainz went into the barrier nose-first so the barriers might well have forced the wheel back toward the driver's head.

And meanwhile you've got a dozen or more marshals all kicking their heels, scratching their heads about how to lift the barriers and waiting for a medical car.
I would hope, at least, that somebody was talking to him and confirmed he was okay and that's what allowed them to take their time in freeing him.

Overall, I can see why they decided it was safer to lower the noses of the cars but in the event of a front suspension failure it DOES mean the car is more likely to submarine under those sponge barriers.

Seeing them transfer Sainz to the medical helicopter now has me worried. I know its not the same circumstance but after Richard Hammond had his accident he was conscious and appeared essentially uninjured until the brain swelling caused him to lose consciousness acshort time after and from then on he was in a critical condition fighting for his life for 48 hours. I just hope this doesn't turn out similar. My worry is his head has suffered a major shock from those barriers coming over the top. Fingers crossed.

Strange conclusion to the qualifying.

All weekend we've been hearing about how Sochi is really easy on the tyres and how tyre wear is minimal and yet a LOT of teams seemed to decide to leave their drivers out on the same set of tyres to do a 2nd run in Q3 and they all went faster in the 1st sector but then ended up with a slower lap-time overall.

I wonder if the lack of practice has caused them to over-estimate exactly how long the tyres last?

Good to see tweets from Sainz in hospital, saying he's hoping to be racing tomorrow.

Totto and lauders faces when rosberg was 0.320 faster than hamilton, classic.

So will we see much of the red cars during the race?

Great relief re Carlos.

Hamiltons weird posturing scrutinizing of Vettels car after the quallies looked weird/sinister/deranged/coded message

Wasn't he just doing everything to avoid even looking in Rosbergs direction?

Just watched the GP2 feature race. As much of it that they managed to run.

Sochi is far from ideal for an F1 or GP2 race. The blend back in contributed to one of the crashes. They had to drive a JCB all the way down a straight just to recover a car. You've got a fast corner with three layers of tech pro on the outside of it as there is no run off. If a car crashes there it takes ages to repair.

Why should F1 and GP2 race in between all these concrete walls just to find a use for an old olympic place.

Lets hope we have a safe race today but they should cancel the Russian GP until they build a real race track.

Anyone see F1 Rewind yesterday morning? Whoever picks the races must be a big Gilles fan. Spain 81 yesterday and France 79 2 weeks ago. Great to watch.

Interesting to hear Claire Williams tell DC "We need to help our engine supplier bring home the Constructors championship today".
She obviously knows which side her bread is buttered - not that there's anything wrong with that.

It'll probably be a bit worrying for Ferrari to think that Mercedes customer-teams ARE aware that they have a role to play in helping their engine supplier though.

Of course, "helping Mercedes" means finishing ahead of the Ferraris so it's not like there's any real conflict of interests so it's all good.

Haven't watched it yet.
I usually watch it on iPlayer mid-week. It's usually enjoyable TV though.

A bit dirty the way Rosberg parked it on the exit of turn 4 (?) after hearing that the safety-car had been deployed.

Obviously hoping Hamilton would run into the back of him or that somebody else would run into Hamilton.

Says someone who says "Karma baby...karma" at Rosberg's retirement. How is that not fanboy words?
