James Allen has some good comment on this.

It should be remembered that it is the wish of the family for people not to speculate.

Just been watching an old Top Gear on BBC 3. It was from December 2009 and Jenson Button was the star in the reasonably priced car when he had just won the title. Happy days.
Anyone know what the prospects look like for him this year? Just as grim?

Depends entirely if Honda have sorted out their issues, which we won't know until testing in 2 weeks. Its unlikely they'll be competing with Merc or Ferrari so their target is to beat Renault powered teams. 5th in the CC will be a realistic target.

So Kevin Magnussen has been confirmed to replace Pastor & Jack Jones the Butcher is sponsoring Renault. It's like when the DJ Johnnie Walker had his name plastered over the McLaren...😁

Honda have got to do better, sure they will improve. Still a lot of analysis saying the size zero concept just isnt the right thing to do. It kind of sounds like Honda won't accept any stear from Mclaren.

Ferrari have a lot of fundamental changes to power unit and cooling package. Sounds like lots of potential. Just hope it all works together, don't want to see a buzz saw come out on the first day of testing.

Thanks goodness the winter is over... first testing underway in Barcelona. Early signs are not great for Mclaren, though. Rumours are Honda have not made significant strides over the winter and so far JB is well over 3 seconds off the early pace. Yes it's very early days so far and Mclaren may be just looking of reliability first off before turning things up.

I'll be most interested to see where Haas and Manor are. The mid-field and tail-enders may be very closely matched this season.

For McLaren Sky are now reporting that Honda have brought a MK1 engine for this test and will have a MK2 for next.
And then from what they learn from both engines, they will turn up in Australia with a MK3

Bernie having another rant about F1 - must be looking for a buyer again.

New qualifying format agreed : http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1...r-2016-675278/

Plus potential Time ballast based on championship position.

They might just about get away with the elimination stuff but add time penalties will mean casual fans IMO will not watch qualifying as it would become confusing.

Why change qualifying? It's already the most exciting part of the weekend quite often. The time penalty idea is stupid as well and it'll never get approved.

I don't think qualifying works at the moment. It's either obvious who will be knocked out or if it's a fast car really all that happens is you are deprived of them for the rest of the weekend.

What they have came up with is even worse. It must designed with keeping cars on track but not sure that will work with only six minutes you could do two runs on new tyres max. So strat will likely be to do one run and watch the 90s tick down.

As for reducing Q3 to 8 runners all you are doing is taking exposure and possible track position from a mid field team. Just what we need.

The pole head to head all that like means is seeing the mercedes team mate battle four times instead of three.

Will team tactics come into play with drivers going out to sacrifice themselves and block other rivals?
Forza Ferrari
25-02-2016
One thing is for sure with already eliminated cars still on track there will be an argument about blocking at some point.

New qualifying off until Spain at least.

Bernie said he was against the new qualifying and his idea was not approved. He wanted more change. So if you won the race from pole he then wanted that person to start 10th ect.

I just wish they would leave stuff like this alone and concentrate on making the cars more equal.

I think if you win the race from pole you should only get 20 points and if you are either second or third from a grid slot of 4th or higher you should get an extra 4 bonus points.

Halo cockpit protection design.

They seem to like it but let see how they cope in race conditions under pressure and having to see things quickly..

I saw the pictures this morning. I don't have a problem with the concept and the drivers are all backing the idea but I'm not sure on how clear the visibility will be with how thick the pillar is in the middle.

Supposedly Red Bull have a different concept that they will test next month.

I've heard the halo device is not popular with some of the drivers.

I remember the HANS device was not popular in America at first. There's no such thing as a basilar skull fracture. Then Dale Earnhardt died.

My main concern is whether the halo device may be a liability in other types of accidents, such as Pedro Diniz's accident at the 1999 Nurburgring GP, where his car flipped, landed upside-down on a kerb and destroyed the rollbar.

New qualifying will start in Australia...for now.

Hamilton has been very vocal about not wanting it and wanting a choice whether to run it. I can't see that happening. Halo safety will be integrated into the technical rules. Racing open cockpit cars is innately more dangerous than closed cockpit. Drivers know this, know the risks and have to decide for themselves if it's worth it. I personally think I'd rather keep open cockpit racing pure and improve other aspects of safety such as trackside, catch fences etc... but then I'm not a driver.

It's a terrible decision. They've totally ignored the drivers' opinion or the compromise that had been put forward. They've taken something that wasn't broken and broken it in the hope it solves a perceived issue, which it won't. Qualifying will be boring as hell now as car after car drops out, reducing the field and actually reducing the chances of something surprising happening. Q3 will end painfully from now on. I won't be surprised to see this dispensed with inside 4 or 5 races.

Just have a bad feeling for this season, last year was pretty boring but they seem hell bent on making F1 worse than ever with stupid rules ect. Like you say a number of top drivers have made their point clear on the qualifying mess, Alonso sad the whole saga has saddened him but hey lets forget what the drivers want.

I may be proved wrong and hoped I am but with not long to go I am not even a least bit excited yet.
