You are deluded. The only thing Lewis loves is himself. He doesnt care about the sport.
Nonsense

I find it so strange that he should retire when it is usually the time when the winner makes the most dosh!
As if getting a huge contract is all that matters in the world, when you are already a millionaire....

I am surprised. Especially since holding out for a 2 year contract, when Merc was only offering a 1 year deal. However good on him, hes going out at the top. Hes been racing for around 2 decades, not something you do if you are not passionate about the sport.

I guess in a way he has saved Lewis from finding another driver...after his antics this year, it would not have been a surprise if he was let go. However for Merc to find two drivers is a big ask. So no doubt will keep him on now.

Merc should mess with Hamilton by signing Alonso. Alonso is a better driver than Lewis, so after getting used to the car, will no doubt be able to beat him on a consistent basis. Come on Merc sign Alonso!!
Yeah right, he really showed the world that was the case when they were teammates in 2007, Hamilton's rookie year when Lewis matched Alonso for wins & points, and secured 6 poles to Alonso's 2.

Hamilton is now more experienced, with more poles, race wins and world championships than Alonso. Why anyone would imagine that Fernando could beat Lewis now, when he couldn't beat him as a rookie is beyond me. Even if Alonso wasn't too scared to race against him in equal machinery. Lets not forget how he ran away to Renault after just one year of his three year contract.

Surprised at that news. Without knowing anything about Rosbergs family situation i can only assume he doesnt want or have the ambition of retaining the title. Probably because he knows this was his one shot at it with Hamiltons reliability issues earlier in the season.

Ill always maintain he isnt that great of a driver frankly and has been extremely lucky to land himself this drive.

I see you're still absolutely clueless about F1.

I seem to remember a certain rookie driver walking all over Alonso in 2007 - and that was even with Alonso having an inside line to Ferrari's race strategy and setup, and before Alonso tried to blackmail Ron to get preferential treatment.

Alonso is a lot of things...a cheat, a blackmailer and a liar - but a better driver than Hamilton? Nope. Not in this lifetime.

So Rosberg has shied away from the prospect of having to defend his title that he knows was won by reliability - and by doing so, has dropped his team in the brown stuff by not giving them suitable time to find a replacement.

I think Rosberg a coward. I'm just wondering how to explain this to my son, who is a die-hard Rosberg fan.

But there's another side to this, I suppose. Rosberg is the WDC, and from his perspective, it doesn't really matter how he got there. He's the champ. and he did so within the rules. He played the patient game and it paid off. And maybe he's happy with that - maybe that's enough for him to say that he's met his goals and he can walk away having done so.

He can live with the prospect at being considered not as great a driver, at being considered the "reliability champ". It's a rare thing to know what you want from life, and rarer yet to realise when you've gotten it. I'll bet most of us would love to have that sort of peace of mind (and the bank account that comes with it).

I guess that's the way I can explain it to my son.

Or maybe you could tell your son, that he has achieved his childhood dream, he has nothing left to prove as a racing driver...but by obtaining his dream he has neglected his wife and child, and now wants to be a husband and father and enjoy the quality of their company.

Or he's realised that he just doesn't have it in him to compete - that's also not something to be ashamed of.

Let's be honest here - when you're competing against one of the best drivers on the grid, you have to constantly dig deep and work hard just to be on an even footing. And that's exactly what Nico has managed to do over the last three years of Merc being dominant. But for some people, there's only so much fight and drive in them and when they've won, it just leaves.

I don't think spending time with his family is the main reason for retiring - but I think it's definitely one of the benefits of getting out of the circus. He just gets to lead an ordinary (well...ordinary for the ultra rich) life and be a husband and father. I was thinking that this will be the first Christmas with his family where he can just pig out, eat what he wants stay up late, drink copious amount of wine and be free from the stress of prepping for next season.

Damn, that must feel good. I'll be he's sleeping like a baby tonight.

One of the best drivers on the grid? Puuuleeese!

Put Hamilton in any other car and he's not going anywhere. That's what's wrong with F1 these days - who the driver is no longer matters it's all controlled by the technology.

Keep on telling yourself that. It won't make you any more correct. I seem to remember him in a dog of a car in 2009 and still managed to drag it around to stay in contention for the title until pretty late into the season. Which kind of shoots a big hole in that obviously wrong opinion of yours

I think Nico is retiring because he knows he wont win the title and he knows that the team would get rid of him eventually

That was 7 years ago - I'm talking about now. Put him in a Force India and put Sergio Pérez in the Mercedes........................................you're deluded if you think Hamilton would come ahead in that one.

Ahhh...moving the goal posts, eh? Hamilton is a top driver. The teams chiefs voted him the best driver on the grid over the WDC this season - I think they'd have a better grasp of a drivers abilities compared to you.

Nigel Mansell sort of retired by moving to Indycar the year after winning the title, I think his aborted comeback in 1994 should be forgotten.
Mansell's retirement was forced by Williams and Prost

Hamilton is the least skilled F1 champion there's ever been. Totally overrated.

Really?

Why is that...you just think he is all speed and not much in terms of tactical knowledge?

Certainly one of the more entertaining when on form.

I am not wanting to get involved in any of the above arguments but my views on Hamilton are that he is indeed one of the best racing drivers F1 has had. That view has been shared by other drivers (past and present) and also other people involved directly in the F1 world.

As for Hamilton the person, he has always come across as a bit of a dick. I think his only friend in F1 is his dog! Jenson Button once said as well that Lewis never interacts with any of the drivers and from the picture below you can see how well liked he is

Hamilton is indeed a bit of a dick. Trying to find a fellow driver who's worked with him to say something positive is tricky.

But to suggest he's not fast? Ludicrous! He's naturally up there with the fastest and would hold his own with anyone on the grid. He has the natural speed that means he doesn't need to work at it.

A surprise decision by Rosberg but not so he says to Hamilton.

It gives Mercedes a bit of a headache as most drivers are sorted and under contract for next year but the likely candidates appear to be Vettell as all is not well with him and Ferrari, Bottas and Wherlein. Vettell and Hamilton could be more of headache than it would be worth.
