It's not within the rules -- in-season testing is banned. It seems a special exception was made here. Very unfair, but I don't see what the other teams can do since it was sanctioned.
It sounds as if it is within the rules for Pirelli to ask to use a team's car to test new tyres, so in that respect Mercedes haven't done anything wrong.

Obviously it would have been more fair if Pirelli had taken a 2012 car from one of the teams instead of a current car, but clearly that didn't happen.

As I said though, none of the teams would be protesting if their car had been asked for. So it does seem to me to be a case of them complaining because they weren't picked, when it was logical to pick the Mercedes as it's notoriously bad for tyre wear, and Pirelli are trying to avoid such high tyre wear so would need to test one of the cars that is hardest on its tyres. If the tyres are more durable for the Mercedes, then they should be even easier to manage for everyone else.

OK so it's race day:

Betting time: On what lap will Hamilton prang a wall and retire from the race or limp home in last place?

Last time he hit a barrier during the race itself he won the race.

And it'll be a Caterham or Marussia last unless they all retire. Be realistic.

The big question ross hasn't answered is where did the tyre data go that would be the advantage to mercedes.

One mercedes going slow is also cheating you must race the car ahead at all times.

Oh for goodness' sake, if you're going to give a running commentary on the race, get rid of the anti-Mercedes bias, it's so blatant it's not funny.

Hamilton is not doing anything wrong, he's within a second or so of Rosberg, and looking after his tyres like everyone else. And there's a gap forming after the Mercedes and Red Bull, so to say Mercedes aren't racing is frankly laughable. If you're going to make ridiculous accusations, at least have some sort of actual proof

Looks like they're covering it with double-waved yellows. Good job race marshalls!

Tells you all you need to know when Maldonado and van der Garde can lap 2 seconds quicker than the rest of the field, after stopping for repairs.

Button getting a bit upset about Perez again.

So, the people who are complaining about the tyre test - would you really have this borefest for the rest of the season instead?
