Interesting Webber has announced he is stepping away from F1 at the end of the season... opens a good ride for somebody although now more than ever it looks like a clear no.2 seat which could prevent a top level driver. Maybe an opening for PDR?

Sad day for the sport, Webber seems to be one of the genuine nice guys in the paddock - he's one of my favourites of the current drivers anyway. But his reasoning is understandable - interesting though that at least one of the other top teams approached him this year. Presumably not Ferrari given it appears he turned them down last year (so is Massa still in F1 by default then?), so maybe Lotus? Would have been interesting to see him and Raikkonen as teammates...

And I agree, his seat now looks like a clear no. 2 seat so I don't understand why Raikkonen is the favourite to take it (apart from the Red Bull being likely the best car), can't see him and Vettel working as teammates at all. I wouldn't be surprised if Di Resta is chosen, but he's not making the best reputation for himself this year due to all his complaining, so it could well be one of the Toro Rosso drivers who gets a chance. They'd probably be more compliant with Vettel's wishes too, which would be highly irritating...

I am not sure it is a clear No.2 seat available. Webber hasnt been a No. 2, so why would RB suddenly have a No.2 seat now? I think if Kimi goes there (I hope he does), it will be obvious its not a No. 2 seat. Kimi wont want to be a No. 2. If they dont get Kimi, I think the most likely chance would be to promote someone from their sister team, Verne probably the most likely of the two.

If Kimi does go there, it will be the most exciting pairing on the grid.

I think that could be disputed, to be honest, plenty of people think Webber is number 2 in reality, if not in terms of what Red Bull say.

And his departure leaves Vettel as the established driver in the team, with a very strong track record, so it's very easy to see why many are saying that it's a clear number 2 seat - Vettel is in the position to be entirely dominant in that team, and given his closeness with Marko and Horner may even have a say in who gets the drive...

Let me clarify what I meant. Webber is not a No.2 like Massa is at Ferrari. Where at the first race, Massa would have to let Alonso through if Alonso was behind him. They both start of the season as equals. This is backed up by the fact that they were told to hold positions when Webber was onfront of Vettel. Vettel broke team orders, and overtook Webber, but the team did put Vettel up to this. As the season goes on, Vettel tends to have more points than Webber. Its at this point that RB tend to start favouring Vettel. I am pretty certain, if Webber had the points lead over Vettel, they would start to favour Webber. Thus they tend to favour the driver with the points advantage, which happens to be Vettel.

Its true Horner and Marko like Vettel, probably because hes the one winning for the team. If the roles were reversed and Webber had Vettels success, would they prefer Webber, probably, whos knows.

I would be disappointed as I don't think he is good enough. I would want him to win races stop acting like an idiot, walking around with a dog, lying, cheating and being an embarrassment generally.

Hes better than Massa. Massa hasnt won a race in ages. Certainly Hamilton has won races since Massas last race win. Agree bringing your dog to the pit garage is not ideal. Not sure where he has lied or cheated in his professional life. He may well have in his private life (which doesnt really bother me). We know for a fact that Alonso has cheated and lied during his professional life. Is he an embarrassment? I agree hes made a couple of comments/tweets that he shouldnt have, but that was a while ago now. However I would have thought Alonso getting hold of Ferrari secrets and using them at Mclaren is way more embarrassing than anything Hamilton has done.

I am no fan of Hamilton, but it seems from your criteria, he is much better suited to Ferrari than Alonso and Massa are. Not bringing your dog to the pit garage is easily remedied, so not really a problem.

Better than Massa is not good enough. Massa is the number two and he crashes. To go to Ferrari Hamilton would need to be the Alonso driver and he is not that.

Actually leaving the dog at home is not as easy as it sounds as without these things Hamilton becomes emotionaly effected misses his girlfriend and starts driving slowly. F1 drivers need to be focused and not spend their time looking for the next celebrity gimic.

Becoming a serious focused consistent driver is a large adjustment for Hamilton. The dog is just one symptom of the essential characteristics which Hamilton lacks.

I dont get your better than Massa is not good enough comment. Massa isnt better than Massa, yet he has a drive for Ferrari, so why shouldnt Hamilton, who is better than Massa? Granted hes not as good as Alonso, but hes still pretty darned good. Apart from Alonso and Kimi there is no better driver on the grid.

You don't understand that most teams have a number two driver who is of a lower standard and that due to the amount of wages Hamilton demands he is only a valid consideration for the number one driver slot? This means he has to be Alonso, vettel good not massa and not mark webber.

A sad day for F1 losing such a revered and well-like driver like Webber.

That it only really true if funds are limited. With Ferraris budget (and the top four teams) money isnt really an issue. So having two top drivers isnt a problem. Who knows we make get a Vettel/Kimi driver lineup at RB next season. Two top drivers in the same team.


Alonso was never given equal status at Mclaren. It was clear early on that the team revolved around Hamilton.

Funds are limited. Ferrari isn't as rich as it used to be. The more you spend on the drivers the less you have to spend on the car. Having two top drivers can cause problems. Why take 10m out your car budget to have driver disharmony.

Seems a bit silly to suggest that a reigning WDC would be considered #2 at a team compared to a rookie, regardless of how highly thought of the rookie was.

Seems like McLaren did their usual "equal status" thing and the 2-time WDC had a meltdown when face with a serious rival.

That's exactly as it happened... Hamilton was in as a development driver to sit behind 2 time world champion and at the time youngest ever F1 champion.. it was clear that Hamilton was the quicker of the 2 and by the 6th race of the season Alonso was throwing toys all over the place... so McLaren did the sensible thing and got behind Hamilton who went on to win a WC... Alonso has been notable in finishing second for the title in that time though

Interesting 30mins from GP2 there. F1 really is starting to look weak in all areas when compared with other formulas.

That is truly sad. He has been treated very badly by RBR and they deserve to lose him, but for him to leave the Formula all together, I think will be a big loss to the sport.

You have to remember Ron ran Mclaren when Alonso joined, and Hamilton was Rons baby. It certainly wasnt equal status. Although I would imagine what actually happened is somewhere between what you and I think happened.

I don think most Ferrari fans would mind Hamilton going to Ferrari. At least a lot more of them would then stick up for Ferrari, rather than stick the boot in every opportunity they got.
