Hugo, who is very smart by all accounts mentioned that the leaves on the fire giving off a smell could be because the washing water had been poured over them before they were used for burning.... Rosemary right away shot him down..

He wondered if throwing the dirty water from their laundry wash on the leaves was making the leaves smell when they were put on the fire. What a hideous comment to make and Rosemary did well to put him in his place for making such a ridiculouly childish comment

I really like her. I think out of all the ones left now, I would miss Charlie or David the least.

Spot on - like a dog with a bone. Calling Hugo rude and completely unaware that she was the rude one in that exchange.

Thanks ! I thought I missed him calling Rosemary a smelly old bat or something that deserved him being treated like a six year old !!

Last week Hugo asked her why she was whispering , which she was, and she flared up at him, saying she was talking not whispering.. but she told lies,

She can't help herself can she. She can't even back down when she's gone way over the top. Perhaps she's having a mental pause or something but that was uncalled for. Poor Hugo. I could press him to my bosom and soothe him.

He did really well not being rude to her, most people would have been.

He did say that if that had happened within the first four days of going in there, he would have. He seems to be really reassessing himself and that is always a good thing. I didn't like Hugo to begin with but I really like him now. Well done to him for keeping his cool and giving Rosemary enough rope to hang herself.

I think that Hugo coped with Rosemary brilliantly. He wasn't rude at any, time. She, was. She acts as if her word is law and that anyone who questions that even politely, is being 'naughty'. I dont find her endearing at all.

He said that he thought that the leaves smelt in the fire because their washing water had previously been poured over them.

How rude can you get?
What a rude man he is.

No, that wasn't rude. The washing water would, contain sweat, oil and skin debris. The water would evaporate, leaving the other stuff. When burned, it might indeed, cause a smell.

I think Rosemary has been hiding her true character being nicey nicey to everyone and playing up her cooking role so that no one dare criticise her.

Its obvious that she can't control her emotions if anyone challenges her opinion. Its little wonder that men have stayed away for 20 years.

I had never heard of her before but they said something about doing a program teaching girls to be ladies. How can she teach anyone to be a lady when she is so uncouth herself?

Ridiculous statement.. its HER that cant take criticism! Who does she think she is saying "l wont have it!" and " its not good enough!" Hugo was wonderfully restrained with her ridiculous 'i know better than you' attitude.

There is obviously some major fault with her volume control as she denies whispering (when she is) and then claims not to be shouting (when she's bellowing loud enough for them to hear her a mile away). Perhaps she has a problem with her hearing???

Exactly as she is as the overbearing and often, extremely rude, Mrs Shreger in Ladette to Lady. I have often thought that she is more lacking in manners than the ladettes..

She felt bad about it and tried to stop arguing (several times) but she had to have the last word - she just couldn't hear what he was saying, so busy was she defending herself.(a sure sign of insecurity)

I do like her though - she doesn't mean any harm. Defenitely a character in the Margaret Rutherford tradition

I got the impression that she felt bad about making herself look foolish and petty - I don't think that she was in the slightest concerned about whether she had upset anyone unnecessarily - and she just wasn't willing to be challenged.

She was a bit like a runaway train - she just couldn't stop herself once she got started. But I agree she doesn't like to be challenged - she does think she knows best.

Exactly - she was actually verbally bullying him. He did not agree with her and was accused of being rude for saying so. No point in having a 'discussion' with Rosemary because she thinks she is right and the other person is rude for having a different opinion.

Margaret Rutherford would never have behaved so horribly. She was adorable.
