If I phone a friend in the USA from my landline (line rental with Sky) to their mobile phone -- does it come under the free calls to the US included in the Sky package or is it only to a landline phone - if you see what I mean ?

It is normal for landline and mobile calls to the USA to be the SAME price (in your case zero)!

This is because, unlike in Europe, US mobile (cellphone) users normally have to pay to RECEIVE calls (as well as make them) - thus there is no extra cost to the caller. Check with your friend that any potential charges to them to receive your calls are included in their cellphone contract!
