I agree with Martin, but only with tranquilizers as death maybe a bit too far - *cue the 'who?' posts* he along with his band sell out arenas across the world say he's definately worth an opinion.

I agree that death would be a bit drastic. As a compromise, I'd use live rounds but just go for the knees and ankles.

He didn't write Tainted Love surely! That was a Soft Cell song.

Tainted love was actually written in the 60s and sung by Gloria Jones.

Edit, Gloria Jones was Marc Bolans girlfriend, who was killed in a car crash, Marc Almond was also nearly killed in a bike crash, moral of the story, dont go anywhere near anything to do with Gloria Jones if you are called Marc

Ahh, I didn't know that. Not too surprised though. Thanks.

Martin has a point about the bands : most of the great groups in history came together naturally (often through friendships or word of mouth).

The exceptions would be boybands like The Monkees and Boyzone, and pop combos like Bucks Fizz.

I reckon he only means shot with a camera.

But really close up, so that all the wrinkles show through the botox sheen

So Martin Gore doesn't advocate violence but in the same sentence he says he wants Simon Cowell to be shot? What a moron.

how is that different to today? 99% of bands still form the old way and there's half a dozen manufactured boybands. Same as ever.

It reminds me of the skit from (I think the third & final series) of BBC3 brilliant very dark satire animated comedy series "Monkey Dust", in which Mark Chapman (the murderer of John Lennon, rather than the Radio 5 Live presenter) is allowed parole on the condition he tracks down and murders Simon Cowell.

The punchline was he tracks down Simon Cowell, but then SC gives him a load of cliched flattery about turning him into a Worldwide superstar, so he does not kill him and becomes a popstar in his own right.

Sadly it's not on youtube.

It's a figure of speech, not an invitation for someone to literally shoot Simon.

What Martin Gore says of these shows has been said many times before by other artists, and he has a point.

But what he says about bands coming together organically (and thus having greater staying power) may be the ideal, but it doesn't always happen that way.

Depeche Mode's labelmates at Mute, Erasure, formed when ex-DM founder member Vince Clarke advertised for a singer in a music magazine and along came Andy Bell. There's nothing particularly organic about hiring someone that way, the duo did not know each other before, but they've been successful for 27 years now.

And were it not for Simon we wouldn't have had this delectable cover version of one of Martin's songs. I think they must have brought the singer in at 4am and drugged her coffee - she sounds so different.

I guess what Simon Cowell's trying to say is words are very unnecessary - they can only do harm.

I know but it still looks/sounds stupid to say "I don't advocate violence" in one breath and then he wants someone shot in the other. Joke or not, it just makes him look thick.

Blimey. That's about three thousand times better than I expected it to be when I saw what it was.

As for the OP. Martin Gore can say whatever he wants.

Not as bad as I'd expected it to be, but still smothered in Syco saccharine. This is the standard I expect from Depeche Mode covers.

I think we need to get the balance right here.

I know!, Fancy Simon having the nerve to call Martin a Weirdo when he spends tens of thousands trying to look younger than his years. It's Simon who's the weirdo.
