I am about to purchase a dvd recorder in order to be able to copy movies etc from my Sky & Humax receivers to dvd.

i am advised that you are not able to record hd movies from Sky to a DVD recorder is this correct?.

Having looked generally it seems like a minefield as to which unit to buy hence my request for some guidance. Can anybody recommend a nice unit worthy of buying that I can hook up to either my Sky or Humax receivers and record/copy to a dvd? Cost is not an issue within reason.

Many thanks in advance

DVD cannot record HD as a video disk. It can record a data disk with HD video files on it that some Blu-Ray players can playback (but not DVD players).

But even if you had a Blu-Ray recorder which can record a HD video disk you would still not be able to record HD from the Sky box or whatever. I do not know of a single recorder with HDMI inputs. You might find one with Component Video inputs and use that in conjunction with a HDMI to Component Video converter box and might be able to record HD that way. Always assuming HDCP copy protection didn't get in the way.

The best you can hope for is to record an HD original in SD via the SCART output on the Sky or Humax boxes. They will downscale the HD recording to SD to allow it to be carried via SCART. So in a sense you can record an HD programme, just not in it's original HD.

There are not many DVD recorders about now. Panasonic are about the only top end make that I can think of off the top of my head. Sony don't seem to do any anymore.
